Check that it didn't reapply the SP2 update as part of the 'upgrade'. If so this could have messed around with the settings in Interntet Explorer, especially since it was reinstalled to 6. Try going through the options and selecting default for everything and see if that changes anything.
Also maybe you can look at the network settings in control panel and seeing if there's a box to tick to enable access to the internet. I had to install and upgrade XP to flash a bios recently and those two annoying things, amoung the many thousands :| , were both little problems for me.

Any Ideas or Help thanksYour computer will not have the ability to access the net because it will no doubt have lost the drivers to the modem.
Why were you installing XP on a computer that already had XP... Why not buy vista, they're pretty much the same price... and pretty much the same operating system (just different look and a few more pop-up screens, but you can get rid of those)
I have never had a version of XP that needed validating over the net, in any case, Microsoft usually give you like 30 days to activate.
I'd say, try installing again, see if it does the same thing.

I had to validate over the net, call a cutomer service number, key in 9 strings of 6 digit numbers, then get told that I had an ivalid product, got put on hold, talked to a guy in India who interogated interviewed me about where I bought it, how many computers it was on, when I had bought it, why I thought it wouldn't activate, and then he gave me a new key... which worked again once after with I can to validate over the net, call a customer service number....
And I can't upgrade that to SP2 as it is, it got far enough to do what I want which was to run something that upgraded the bios, but as for SP2, it hangs at the part that says "verifying product key".
If you look on the manufactureres website you may find the drivers. If I could upgrade mine to SP2, I'de have all of my drivers and utilities installed. I was going to keep a small partition with Windows on it and try out using instead of when I very rarely use Windows in an emulator while also keeping something there for easier restore to resale since I don't have a restore disk, but now I just have a small partition with a totally annoying install of a crappy OS that I can't upgrade and with retarded customer support and that wont run a few of my drivers because James Hetfield had some sort of problem with people pirating music... idiots, all of them. <---Hetfied part is a bad attempt at a joke.
When you think about it, by the time you buy Vista, upgrade your hardware, and upgrade the rest of your software, you may as well have just sold your computer and bought something twice as good as what you were planning on upgrading to. Then you can run your old crappy Windows essentials, like in my case running Word for documents that need to look line for line and pixel for pixel the same as wherever they get sent to, and OS in an emulator.
wow! I just looked and had to edit to be clear... the relevant part in addition to Randoids info about drivers is that sometimes you can find them on the manufacturer website. All of mine are there for XP
