Specs look good and it has something called "USB Plus"
Anybody here got one of these babies and care to comment on it? :)
Perhaps they put a buffer or something on the USB port.
Hope they have stuck with MTK this time.
Looks nice but.

I haven't got one yet but i am tempted to buy one as a back up player. It runs on a Zoran chipset so chances are the PQ will be pretty good.My quess is what they mean by "USB Plus" is simply that the usb imput is 2.0 and not 1.1.You need the 2.0 to play a dvd file through the usb properly as you can with the Zensonic Z500.The usb on the Philips HDMI machine is only 1.1 so if you try and play a dvd file through the usb it comes to a stuttering halt real quick as it gets starved for data.As soon as i lay my hands on the machine i will let you know if dvd files are good to go through the USB :)
Also be aware that the machine is r4 only.To hack the region code you have to d/load a file from the net and burn to cd to gain access to the hidden region code menu.

I bought one of these from Target for $129. So far it's been good, but I've only had it a couple of hours!
As far as I can tell, "USB Plus" is just marketing drivel. The LG sites for other countries say "USB Port" instead, and the manual states that it supports USB 1.1 only.

• This unit can support USB1.1. that is what the manual says so it may well be 2.0.Try playing a dvd rip through the usb and see how you go.

If you translate the user comments theres one person who reports its USB 2.0 and plays movies without jerkiness.

They throw in a HDMI cable and multi region over there to  Good heads up fluff.Divx 6 support to so you can access multi audio and sub streams. The Zensonic Z500 doesn't support this yet for a machine that cost 3 times as much

Ah, thanks for pointing that out - I must have read what I expected to read!
I'm a bit new to all of this, so I'm not too sure what you mean by trying a "dvd rip". I took a VOB file straight off a DVD and renamed it to have an .mpg extension, and it played but it was a bit jerky whenever there was much movement in the video. Is that what you meant? (The same VOB file plays fine off my USB flash drive when connected to my PC).

If it plays jerky during those fast moving scenes it is indeed only USB 1.1 just like the Philips machine.Makes you wonder why Australia would get a different spec machine to south america  .It does limit the appeal though although you can still play your AVI's d/led off the net without major problems.Somehow i like the idea of filling up a 500gb external drive with my fav dvd's and watch them through the 2.0 usb of the Zensonic knowing i'm not wearing the crap out of my optical drive.I might look elsewhere for my backup dvd player now :|

Yeah, it does seem a bit strange, and a bit of a pity. Let me know if there's anything else you want me to test with to make sure it definitely doesn't have USB 2.0.

To change the region code, I just used the steps I found for the DN100H - no disc-burning required:
1. Turn on DVD player,
2. Open disc tray,
3. Press 0 0 0 on remote,
4. Region menu shows on TV screen,
4. Select 0 for ALL REGIONS,
5. Press PAUSE on remote,
6. Power off

That's right. This will also work:

(Burn the IMG file to a CD and put it in the player.)

Do you know if it upconverts to 1080i over componant, or only HDMI?
I ask because this is a handy way around the HDMI licienceing Bull.

I had a look in the manual, but it's all a bit over my head! I've attached the relevant part of the manual - I hope it's useful.

How convoluted - they want it both ways, especially were they say that even with the HDMI connection the picture may not display properly.
The answer: Yes it will do 1080i (in NTSC) over componant if you bypass the copy protection by ripping the dvd you want to play.
Moral: Anti Piracy measures encourage normal people to explore the illegal in order to get the most out of their equipment.

That works the same on the Z500.
And yes it is weird that as you say the 'protection' does seem to work the opposite of what it is there for.

If it doesn't, perhaps try the hack that's floating around.
It worked on my LG 9921 :)

i just bought this player today with the intention to watch movies downloaded from my pc on the tv... however like mentioned, the movie stops after 1-2 mins playback... ive tried several approaches to solve it i.e. MPEG4Modifier and reformatting my usb flash drive into FAT system. any further suggestions out there? im thinking my usb flash drive might be giving the problem but im not sure... anyway, apart from the usb "setback", the player is light and is small... design is also modern and simple... wouldn't recommend getting it unless the USB is fixed!!!!!
p.s. should i return it and get a $30 dvd player instead? :(
Went into Good Guys to have a look a the New LG and Threw the test disk at it. Everything played except the last 2, (HighBitrate ones.) Didn't have anything on USB to test. Next time i am i town i'll check out the USB on it. Wasn't really rapped in the result though.
