Tevion 1020 Mpeg4 Player $39!!!!

Hi Guys

I picked one of these up on Sunday as they were only $39

Jeez - this has to be the best bargain xvid, divx, mpeg4 player out there.

The build quality is as good as if not better than the Zensonic Z300/330's - I suspect they might even come from the same factory.

So far it had played every file I have thrown at it, with the exception of a couple of high definition files (that niether my LG or Tevion HDD/recorder would play).

It also has a front power button.

Good points:
It's cheap,quiet, solid, the VDU is clear and easy to read and it seems to play the usual files expected.

Bad Points:
The remote is as good as the stock Zensonic ones - needs to be pointed directly at the machine. Stock will run out.

I know I'm becoming an Aldi Boy ... but I really think this is worth grabing if you want a cheap 2nd or backup mp4/xvid player.

I don't think they do at all, the supplier that does these uses a different factory

No idea on the chipset andw ... is there an easy way for me to tell without opening the box?

The menu has two sides to it - one side has the filename(s) the other side has program options (filter, repeat etc) and jpeg previews (for photos I guess).

The loader and front panel layout are very similar to the Zensonic and the remote (whilst different) is similar to the one that came with the Z330.

As jok11n said though, he doubt they come from the same factory.

Load times, noise etc are much better than the LG9921P I have ... as it is now over a year old I figured it best to grab one of the tevion cheapies for when it blows up (like the Z300 did a year ago).

Id be curious to hear if anyone know what they actually are chipset wise.

Almost all Mediatek's have the same layout (except LG), check my website for photos of those. (and as you had the Z300 etc you should be used to them, so if it's not the same, then it's not MTK.)
Zoran, the ones I've seen will autostart a file when you put a disc in (generaly not the one you want!) they have 2 columns, I think 8 characters for the file name, but it's been a while - filenames on the right hand side from memory.
jok11n will know better than me how to tell from a screen shot if you can get one, as he sees a zillion of these things...

Yep, filenames on the RHS ... it has longfilename support though, including the file extension (IIRC).

It doesn't autorun though - just brings up the file menu.

If there are sub/idx files on the disk it brings up a menu/dialog asking if you want to use them (after you have hit play on the selected file). I havn't tried it, but wonder if this means sub files from another movie could be run .... that would be a weird trick.

It also has one of those multicolored rotating disc displays in the LED - very similar to the one the XMS750 had.

Ok, looks as though it may be a Cheertek chipset, this menu is also similar to the Samsung chipset menu however the Cheertek (used to be know as Winbond previously) would be able to meet this price point so is the more likely of the two

For $39 I don't know why I'm worrying about voiding the warrantee - I might pull the cover off and have a look this weekend.

Cheertek currently supply the cheapest chipset in the market, it could be something else but the screen shots do look like theirs, LSI also have a similar looking menu but I don't think they have any entry level chipsets (nothing I've seen recently anyway) that would be in a unit this cheap. Could be something totally new though, development cycles are generally very quick.

Sunplus has a different menu structure, they could have updated it though, players in this price range generally use Sunplus or Cheertek chipsets as these are the two cheapest solutions available, Cheertek and Sunplus are quite similar in performance, the best all rounder is still MediaTek (in my opinion anyway) Sunplus based players will often start out quite ok but they can get flaky pretty quickly, their processor runs extremely hot and it's not uncommon for them to fail within a few months of regular use.

LSI generally only focus on chipsets for DVD recorders, their performance varies from manufacturer to manufacturer depending on how much work they do on the firmware themselves, some are quite advanced in their file handling and support while many just use the factory supplied Wind River software solution, not bad for a factory supplied solution but the final tweaks made by some factories can make a great deal of difference to the end result.

I subscribe to the Aldi newsletter and get it in my email the Friday before the specials come out .. I just went back through them and none mention this unit .. bloody stinks as I buy cheap divx players and give them away as presents
