View Full Version : how to Force a different DNS suffix search order when using nslook

Hello,

I am having an issue, and need some help to see if this can be fixed or a
work around.

When a user enters an FQDN, the resolver queries DNS using that name.
Likewise, when a user enters a multiple-label, unqualified (not terminated
with a period) name, the DNS resolver adds a terminating period and queries
DNS using that name.

However, if the user enters a multiple-label, unqualified name and it fails
to resolve as an FQDN, or if the user enters a single-label, unqualified
name, the resolver systematically appends different DNS suffixes to the name
that the user entered, adding periods to make them FQDNs, and resubmitting
them to DNS.

The other issue is that the domains that are appended by the resolver don't
match the search suffix list Jamie provided to me.

Here's the first query trace - each of these domains is appended to the
www.yahoo.com query

us.cingular.net
tdc.cingular.net
wdc.cingular.net
cingular.net
attws.com
entpattws.com
ser.cingular.net
wcr.cingular.net
bscc.bls.com

finally

www.yahoo.com

Here's the second query trace - each of these domains is appended to the
www.comcast.net query

us.cingular.net
swr.cingular.net
cdc.cingular.net
tdc.cingular.net
wireless.attws.com
entp.attws.com
ser.cingular.net
sbms.sbc.com
bscc.bls.com

finally

www.comcast.net

Notice that several of these search suffixes don't even show up in the
search suffix list that is on my client

That list is

glr.cingular.net

us.cingular.net

bscc.bls.com

sbms.sbc.com

sbc.com

bls.com

pcs.bls.com

bscc.bls.com

cingular.net

wdc.cingular.net

ser.cingular.net

swr.cingular.net

tdc.cingular.net

ner.cingular.net

wcr.cingular.net

So how can I force the order?
