Actually if my reading of the OP's post is correct he /she is saying - for
$250 more the other amp has 2 optical and 2 coaxial inputs (total of 4 SPDIF
inputs), as opposed to the first amp which has 1 optical and 2 coaxial
inputs (total of 3 SPDIF inputs).

Frankly and extra $250 for an additional optical input is over the top
pricewise unless we are talking seriously hi-end and I doubt it in this
case. As has been mentioned here you can get a multiple input switched
add-on box for a lot less.
Here's some examples -
3 x optical and RGB or component video and audio
http://www.altronics.com.au/index.asp?area=item&id=A3071
http://www.altronics.com.au/index.asp?area=item&id=A3071A#

or a lot more including HDMI , optical and coaxial SPDIF -
http://www.altronics.com.au/index.asp?area=item&id=A3083#

Just a few locally available examples. I'm sure there are lots more.

Cheers,
Alan

Yes, I must agree, that the "cryptic" post could be interpreted that way ;-)

Perhaps the OP could *name names* and be a little clearer so that more
concise advice could be given.

Cheers TT

Thanks TT

The 816 is about all my budget will stretch to. I still need to buy
speakers and active sub. The 2016 does have HDMI but I don't think it
actually uses the HMDI audio, only providing 2 HDMI inputs to one
output. Not that useful for me at the moment maybe in the future. By the
time I get around to buying a widescreen set (they need to drop in price
a lot more), they may offer a number of HDMI inputs making it even less
attractive. The 2016 may have other features but I don't know how
worthwhile they are. The price difference between the 816 and the 2016
is just too great. The 816/516 will also replace an old mini-cd audio
system.

Thanks
