I have just bought an NEC lcd television and I've discovered it has what you would call a faded effect across the top and bottom of the screen (about 1cm).
Is this normal? I took it back to the store and they checked it and said it was alright but I found that it gradually appears after you've been watching for a few minutes.

Anyone know if its normal and if it isn't how do I explain it to the shop?

Any advice would be appreciated

It sounds like you are getting some bleeding of the backlight, very common with LCD's, is it more noticable in dark scenes?

Yes, I think you're right. Suspect it might be the backlight bleeding. If that's considered normal then I guess I wasted my money. Cos the amount of bleeding is too much for me to accept. Yes, it is more obvious when darker.

If the shop won't do anything about it do you think some sort of technician can fix it?

There is no fix as such, you can reduce the brightness but you may not notice any difference at all as the backlight effectively works all the time anyway. It is really a design flaw that causes this, I have quite a few LCD's and I only have one that has no backlight bleed at all, the design of the housing that it is all encased in is what has the most influence on how much bleed you will get.

Next option might be to talk with your retailer about exchanging to something else if it is really that bad.

If you get no joy you may find that you can live with it if you add some ambient light behind the panel, a very soft 25w fluro (with a diffuser) is often suitable, it can help make it a lot less noticable. You can experiment with a lamp quite easily to see if this will help in your situation before you go buying anything.
