For me with a trainees pay,..there was more than one. but the worst by far
was a Morris Major Elite (1963model). It was fucked and I didnt know it.
Hence started my engine training or lay-persons anyhoo.
In the yard, with it idling, there was a constant stream of smoke shooting
upwards outa the oil-hole. I soon learned what that meant. Broke a piston at
70 mph (close to flat throttle) on way to Canberra. Gudgeon still held top
of piston,..made it home, but not before the disintegrating piston put alloy
swarf thru the oil-galleries. The engine slowly died from bearing failure
after that.
Then the diff hemisphere cracked and then broke. Crown-wheel punched a hole
thru the diff housing. Tried to get all the metal outa the diff with a
magnet,..nogo,..more blown diffs after that.
BMC blues,...Jason

Had an XF fairmont ghia for 3 months once. Paid 500 bucks and then 800 to put 2 new tyres, a new battery, and a year of rego on. It promptly blew the head gasket. I drove it anyway until it used more water than petrol, then sold the whole package for 700 bucks. Waste of 600 bucks really, but helped me out when I needed a car. And it lost value much more slowly than my Berlina anyway.
It really was a piece of shit.

Ha ha...these are great cars...lol.
I have 3 of them all elites, have a 1769cc OHC VC Mazda and gearbox in
one,but has the blown diff.
Biggest shit box I have owned is a;
1991 Falcon EA Wagon Auto,I did use this as a subcontracting vehicle and
I did know it was going to fall to bits, however it was the most
expensive to fix car I have owned.
She had over 1 million KM on the clock, and had been overhauled bye a
panel beater, who rounded all the bolts and put auto bodge kit through it.
Not only did he bodge the auto oil pan gasket,he forgot to replace the
rear seal.
She leaked for weeks.
Got a new seal, popped out the tailshaft popped in the seal, and must have
pushed the silly inner bush into the box,got 100km and it had slogged
the tailshaft and gear box housing to the shitter.
Went chasing a new housing,it was the end of the world.
I had to get a new gearbox or get an entire secound had one as ford did
no longer make the housing and no-one would seperate from a box.
Endless days of hunting,$350,$450 for a box and tailshaft, half the time
I had to remove them from the car aswell.
Eventually after 3 months I found a good auto box and tailshaft end for
$150 no hassle,even got a reciept...lol
Put the fucking housing in and she leaked between the housing and
box,and still dripped out the tailshaft rear seal.
I gave up,and just decided instead of tring to sell this thing,I would
drive her into the ground, just topping her with oil as needed.
The last work she did was two the Ford Thames Flat Truck, with no oil in
the auto, which finally fucked her...thank fuck.
I have the good auto, but now she is froozen into history with seized
injectors.
Aswell as this it had a miss, and was not untill I found how to read the
ECU that I had anyidea what its problem was.
Had out the fuel pump, put it back and it leaked fuel, parked in the shed
she leaked over 20litre a night, untill i could get a new fuel pump
gasket, heard later one must put a new one in every time the pump is removed.
Cost me $50 for a set of leads as well, cheapest leads I have ever bought
oddly enough.
Fuck this car cost me some fucking around.
About to take the diff and try to fit it to the Morris major Elite.
have to chance the spring mounts a bit.
Mum bought me my first car,I was lucky,it was not a shitbox. It was a
Mazda...lol

Had a HZ with a 253 4 on the floor it looked ok but it was a complete
basket case. Rust, leaks, cunt wouldn't start in cold mornings and was
gutless and tired.
Only had it for 6 months after my LJ Torana.
And the Mazda SP23 which was the other halfs and that was a lemon too.

TE Cortina 4.1L 6Cyl Auto wagon. Frighteningly bad. Was about an inch
shorter on the driver's side than the passengers. Shit brakes, shit
steering, shit seats (constantly breaking driver's mounts), shit
interior, shit doors, door locks and door handles too. Shit auto
transmission and shit front end.
Apart from that it wasn't a bad car, really....
Cheers,
Andy.

Depends on the definition of shitbox, A toss up between a '80 Sigma in terms
of engine / drivetrain reliability and handling, or in terms of
insignificant and annoying shit going wrong would have to be the car we
currently have, a VX Commodore wagon, but in a decent sized family wagon to
cart the kids & assosciated shit around, we have little choice without
spending a fortune, a Falcon or Commodore, and seeing as my bro. works for
Holden well, the Commodore is still the choice I'd make.
The best car by far that I've owned is a '93 Subaru wagon, that while I
owned it only ever needed regular servicing and a few CV boots over
150,000kms.

The reason they went thru axles and diffs was because the diff was the same
as the Morry 1000,..they just put a taller ratio in it. Horsepower of
Major=60hp,..Morry 1000 around 35-40,..with no "headroom" in design
strength, a disaster waiting to happen.
I used to be able to pick the cracked skirt noise in A60s and other
majors,..a loud clicking noise when acellerating, then the skirt would
eventually parted company. Massive blow-by = overheated piston= quick demise
at high throttle.

That happened to my major as well. Front uni cross-pegs were
oval,..needle -rollers fell out yonks before. Rear g/box bush was chopped
out, seal fucked as well. All this before I parted with hard-earned $$$s

That qualifies as a shitbox :)

The Elite (1628cc) wasn't that bad looking for its time,..I still shudder
when I see one tho. The previous Major (1500cc) had an SU carby,..much
better than the poxxy Solex which warped at the base (2 bolt alloy base) and
introduced an air-leak which helped fuck the valves. Eventually worked that
out after driving around with the choke on to keep it going. Used our nice
flat cement footpath to scrape the base flat again.
Zeniths weren't much better (Hillman used these,..swap with Holden Strommy)

Mazda E2200 van, bought it new in 1984, by the time I sold it a bit over
2 yrs later with 200,000klms on the odo it had had 4 new cyl heads and
the gearbox bearings replaced twice, by far the worst vehicle I've owned
and I will never stop bagging Mazda.

Well my first car was an Austin A40 with the first of the BMC B series
donks in it, no, not the worlds best, bust certainly not the worst.
Someone in England must have heard horror stories about our summers,
the header tank on the radiator was a 44 gallon drum. I can never
forgive it the knee action shocks though. :)
The "worst" is a toss-up between a VK wagon and a Toyota Corona -
don't know which model and don't care to know - just rest assured it
has put me off Toyotas as long as I remain on this planet. Yeah, I'll
go for the Toyota (btw it didn't have the Shitfire 4 in it, it was the
original 2 litre OHC mill). The VK displayed all its nastiness after I
had signed up for a VT2. If it had done it before, Holden would have
been on my Never Buy Again list too. But the VT2 was a good car.
All good for Hyundai so far - when does the RWD V8 version come
out??? :-)

Hell I had a Morris Major Elite and it just kept plugging away, regardless
of what I did to it, the only reason it was finally retired was because the
brakes finally failed and getting parts was near on impossible.
Last time I saw it was as it was being driven away on a trailer to be

Yes I've heard one other story like that. All I can assume is that the car I
naively bought *was* *really* pre-fucked. Looking back it had:
Severe blowby all cylinders. You can tell if its only one or two
as the smoke/fumes has a pulsating appearance outa the oil-hole. This car
was continuous, and either meant a. it had been cooked withsoft rings
'result, or, it had no maintenance ie oil-changes.
Stuffed front uni which had been ignored so long the wobbling
t/shaft had chopped the rear g/box bush out.
Sundry other problems: chronic overheating due multiple head
cracks, whining diff which changed noises as it slowly disintegrated.
Bad airleaks due crappy Solex carby
Fault in generator/associated wiring caused chronic battery
under-charging and battery failure.
Car almost burnt to ground due rear plate light shorting to
earth with no blown fuse, as the run was long which acted as a current
limiter (would have been a mercy)
Gearbox stick nylon cap in selector gate used to fall off,
giving shitty changes
New clutch wouldnt release due knackered master-cyl (didnt know
this at time). Fixed that by lengthening slave operating rod
Exhaust valves "pie-crusted" twice. Due to country high
pedalling and airleak.
Exhaust engine pipe came off manifold twice. "Rear in" parking
in country towns with high gutters pushed the tail-pipe which inturn pushed
engine pipe off manifold.
So yeah,..it had seen better days.
