It is fucking freezing down this way,My poor car.It dose not like
starting with a radiator frozen solid, letalone frozen bore.

I just removed it from out front as by 9 pm it was iced totally
over, lucky the engine was still warm from 5 pm,moved it to the workshop
and found a bucket of water in there frozen 2 inch deep solid.
Got it out of there right away and moved it elsewhere to a no frost
zone(go figure)

The road out front is an ice skating ring, great for those wishing to
take a customised defensive driving course or just find a use for the
old cross ply's.

No idea about snow, think its too cold for snow...lol,
Few days of this a couple degrees down the river will freeze.

-5C used to be a record down here in various parts, only on occasions
however, can't get more than 1 hours work done a day.

Bring your skates.

Well it's cold where he is and by self admission got to what's left of
it's brain ?
Talking to a bloke on the north end of Tassie this morning it was sub
zero and blowing , the out side temp was 30 deg c lower than the inside
:)

-9C and your radiator is frozen solid? That'll teach you to run water
rather than coolant/anti-freeze.

What temp. will your average coolant (without an anti-freeze additive)
freeze at?

And where on earth is the OP? -9's doing pretty well. The coldest
temperature recorded in .au is at Charlottes Pass at -23 deg. C in '94.

He's somewhere in Tassie. I'm moving down there soon(ish) and while I
dont mind cold weather, -9C is a bit much for my tastes. I suspect he
was exaggerating somewhat...

What a bunch of bloody wimps. Here we're probably setting a new record for
the lowest maximum for June.

The previous record here in Darwin was apparently only 24 and we're
currently freezing at 22.

Ha ha,we are way out of BOM readings, actually it is just my place and
some surrounding area's,It is very shaded.
Location North East Tas,cannot tell you elevation cause I don't know,I
used to know, for tuning cars,100m above sealevel and inland about 80km.

Dose not get sun, about 1 hour a day at about 2pm till 3pm
Last night dropped to minus -13 C and today it started to snow however
was melting on impact with the ground.
It can be -0C here and just up the road really nice +10C sunny day.

The house next door is forsale, great place to move.If you like being
frozen for 9 months of the year...lol

Was hoping Noddy was going to bye it and let ClockMeiester come down to
stay.
Apparently ClockMeister has a thing for running around in the frost with
a leather mask and leather undies on....hmmm

Well I generally don't run straight anti freeze cause it is not always
this cold.
So it dose start to freeze, the worse being when the water pump gets
frozen solid and snaps the fins.
Diesel goes thick and gooey.
Think it can freeze at -20 or 30 C

Frozen Bore is worse, snap the rings off the pistons.

My temp gauge is located in a fairly warm spot,I have had one crack and
it cost me $20 so I never put it in that spot again.
We need the heavy duty temp gauge...

My workshop is heated normally, but it got too cold.

No exageration,if you move 1 km up the road you will be fine for 9 hours
of the day, then freeze at night at about average at this stage -1 C.,but
you can expect -2 to -4C as a more accurate reading.
At the seaside we are getting minus 3 -4 C on a regular basis all be it
weather reports 0 and -1C.
They take these measurments from a warm spot on the hill aswell, hardly
accurate.

Yep, at about -9 is pretty weel on the mark. Biodiesel around -6.

start going over (under) -10 and it's not looking good.

At those sorts of temps a number of stuff (not only fuel)
become dodgy, even in petrol engines.

In the USA, I was not surpised to find that my rental car
had a power cord hanging out the front grill ...

The northern states get pretty cold. The Park reported -32 F. one
night on my trip to Yellowstone the end of Jan. last:
http://www.grandshelters.com/yellowstone-2007.htm
Those temps. and the northern exposures gave us some lovely
backcountry skiing.

Canberra got down to minus 9 that same night, from memory. Was that a world

That is cold to be working, I agree. Mechanics' shops are usually bloody
cold in Winter.
My house isn't heated, and this winter it seems to have been colder than
usual. Some nights it's at 5 C so I just go to bed (or have a rug over my
head, like a little tent).

When your fingers split, there's a beaut thing for them. Ski instructor
colleague in the US put me onto it. As our fingers split too, and boy it
hurts.
Neutrogena hand cream, in a tiny little tube. Quite pricey in Australia. You
only need a little bit though, and it repairs split fingers fast. Developed
for the Norwegian climate, especially for the fishermen, apparently.
There's an unscented version. It's more like vaseline than "cream",but it
disappears and works.

My fingers puff up (cold damage from Vermont) and I make lots of typos! they
go all red and glassy.

A bloke I know, got up a business driving dead auto batteries from Canberra
to Sydney for recycling. He reckoned that he liked the requirement to do
that BAS, as it forced him to keep an eye on how his business was going, and
things couldn't get out of control. This guy, although young, built a very
successful business out of nothing.

I once had to replace a block on a new Merc because the factory didn't
ship it (from Germany) with AF and the dealer didn't "catch" it. It
didn't just crack the thing, it split open and deformed a 6" section of
cast iron with the ice expansion.

SOP in Canada. During winter, the councils line the edges of the
playing (grass in summer) fields with 3 x 2's then flood the grounds so
that the kids can skate 'till their hearts' content. They usually skate
on the footpath to get to the park as well. The compacted snow becomes
ice for the duration.

At least one can get out and "enjoy" winter there (but I ain't going
back). Lots of skiing (and associated snow sports), ice racing (car) on
the frozen lakes and, of course, skating (as mentioned) and ice hockey.

Cars are usually "winterised" with AF in the fall and in the autumn, the
AF is removed and put aside for the next winter. Mains powered heater
elements (same as I have in my elec. jug) are available for the engine
block (remove an expansion plug and install like a locking wall
plug/screw) and mats (like a water-bed heater) that goes under the
battery. Can't leave a discharged battery out - it will freeze and
burst the case. The petrol companies change the fuel additives four
times (seasons) per year (maybe here as well - at least for summer and
winter). They even heat some of the bus shelters....

In MEL, I found the winters bloody miserable 'cause it was neither
summer nor winter - just a pain in the arse with cold rain. If it's
gunna get cold - let's have a good cold winter so one can dress for it
and get out to enjoy it! :)
