It's also something I think private pilots should think very carefully
about.

Unless you own a plane, or do enough "rattlesnake charter" to fly IFR
in IMC conditions to around 5 hours per month you are never going to
stay proficient, perhaps I should put a "in my opinion" after that.

In 1991 when I ceased commercial flying I also ceased renewing my IFR
ticket. I also no longer fly twins as I reckoned that the 2 or 3 hours
per year just were not enough to even begin to stay safe.

I don't know the exact date that I'm going yet but it may be that
weekend, I'm going to inspect a property I have bought at Carina which
is the next suburb to Belmont.
Most likely I'll be staying at a mates place in Albany Creek only a
short distance from Ron's:-)
If it looks like I'll be there the same time as you maybe we can meet
somewhere, I'll know more in a week or so.

I'm visiting someone in the same suburb as Ron and I've been there
plenty of times so the neighbours are used to having the tone of the
area lifted when I arrive:-)
Which side of Bris are you, I'm also going to Carina and if theres time
I might go to Maclay Is. to look at the house a mate is building.

Apparently they only stopped a few months ago. He used to get the
sort of "what do you think of ..." type calls so that newspapers
could bulk out articles by misquoting him. "Driver training
expert Peter Wherrett said that the state government plan is a
total waste of time" sort of stuff.

He's happy that, finally, almost nobody cares.

You expect me to bring tea and biscuits to visit you?!?

It's not mars bar and coke, you know. :-p

Fair enough. I only know the suburb Belmont and that the shooting
complex where we're staying is just off the gateway...

Whatever I do over the weekend, I'll have the (by then) 4yo with me.

Interesting.

I never really thought he was all that popular, and why the media would be
chasing him these days is odd.

I didn't used to think so, either. I read the transcript of an
interview done by George Negus a few years ago, and apparently the
TV show Torque had some very blunt criticism of faults in cars and
was very controversial for its era. In terms of manufacturers not
wanting to supply vehicles for him to test, it seems to have been
on par with Top Gear today... :-)

Apparently the Wherrett Sigma came about because he panned the
handling so badly that the head of Mitsu Australia challenged him
to develop a better handling suspension for it. Contrary to
popular belief, the turbo model never bore the Wherrett name,
even though it had the same suspension combination as the
Wherrett model. He simply didn't like the severe turbo lag that
was common at that stage. It wasn't progressive and predictable
enough so he refused to put his name to it.

The most interesting thing of all. He's *not* a "car" person.
He's a *driving* person. He hates most cars because they won't
do what he wants them to do. He's not interested in the design
of mechanicals, etc., just how they drive.

I always thought that if he happily put his name to a Sigma then it was
abundantly clear he knew nothing about cars at all :)
