Gday to all

I'm on the look out for a DVD player that will play DIVX and has USB2 support

what i want to do is run my external HD(has own power supply) via USB so i can watch all my avi files with out having to convert to DVD.

Is this possible?
If anyone could recomend a few brands and model numbers.
that would be great.

There is a Network Media player from D-Link which also has a USB connector. You can either stream media from your PC via Ethernet (wired/wireless) or connect any USB device to play media.

Models : DSM-320 or DSM-520

It also has a DVD drive so you can play DVD directly on it.

There are quite a few units around now with USB2 slots - none seem to actually claim support for hard drives but I gather from some forums that it can work.

I bought a Philips DVP5980K from the Good Guys for $135 (DivX certified) which has the slot, but I don't have a USB drive to test on it.

Big W currently has an AWA player (DivX support but not certified) with a slot for $70 too.

The Pioneer is a USB1.1 player.

The newest version of the MT1389 and some other DVD chipsets do support USB2. However, most implementations don't include sufficient buffer memory on the host side, so you're still stuck with jerky playback of higher bitrate videos from a USB device.

The $34.95 player I picked up from Aldi this morning has a USB port that seems to be USB2

As I type I'm playing a movie right off my 2Gb USB memory stick with no hint of jerkiness.

Seems a very nice player BTW :)

Just lucky....

Try playing something with a higher bit rate, larger the file size and shorter the duration, codec type, audio bitrate AC3 Vs MP3 sound, lots of other factors and it will stutter. I guarantee it.

Well now I have tried a full length divx movie on the Ext 250gb HDD and it worked good, better than on the flash drive it did seem to freeze as well BUT only for a split second much less than the flash drive, very watchable

The last and probaly the best way to watch anything and that was to burn them on to a DVD,was able to fit 5 full lenght Divx movies on to the DVD,
and it played great the menu was easy to navigate as it has been with all
formats so far.

conclusion
flash drive for 30min to 60min tv shows music and photos ,:)
ext HDD for movies ,:):)
and when i want or need to empty the computer ill just toss them all onto a DVD for the best watching results:):) :-)

all in all this player works well and even though its not a $40 special
I dont think you can go wrong with good quality equip,Pioneer seem to make gear that will last at $179 its worth it, (my first cheep dvd player cost me $189) shop around you may still save a few bucks..

Thanks for all the feed back

Same results here. Only drawback is it only shows 13 or so characters in the file name when browsing the file structure. But it does show the full name during playback if you hit the display button.

I cant seem to get the random play of MP3's working. Anyone else have any luck?

Aldi have a Tevion TDVD08 for $35.00 that plays divx etc. & has a USB 1.1 slot. I have been able to play divx files (from a USB-stick) with no stutter etc. via the USB 1.1 slot, BUT, you cannot fast foward OR rewind, so this is a let down in a way. However, for $35.00, it is a GOOD spare DVD/Divx/etc. player with the added bonus of a USB slot (even though it is USB 1.1). ALSO, big let down is that I cannot play my HardDrive files via the USB input. My harddrive is FAT32 formatted and has it's own power supply. Does anybody have any thoughts or an explantion as to why it will play from a USB flash stick but NOT via my external HHD ?

I got the $70 AWA player from BigW. So generic I can't even find a website for it :)

Its a AWA 602P and is surprisingly good. Pretty flimsy looking which you would expect for the price, I get nervous every time I put a DVD in its paper thin tray but it has played every DVD I've put in it - no problems with skipping etc unlike other cheap DVD players I've tried.

DivX playback
- Pretty good, Its played all my difficult DivX/Xvid files - high bit rates, wide screen etc. Plays off DVD or the USB port with no problems. I loaded up my 4GB Thumb drive and it played fine. Pause/FF/RW all work. Filenames are trimmed to 12(?) Characters which is a pain, but expected.

I can fit 10 episodes of BSG no problem on my thumb drive :) no more converting and burning to DVD!

Given the smoothness of DivX playback I'm guessing that its USB2.0

Usual outputs - RF, Composite, SVideo and Component. Also surprisingly a VGA output which I haven't tested.

On the box it says Component is YCbCr but the outputs are labeled YPbPr however I think it is YCbCr since that is what my TV expects and the colours look fine. Unless its smart enough to auto switch between them.

Sound:Stereo and Dolby 5.1 Surround (6 Coax or optical)

I'm really wrapped with it - fits my needs perfectly, I have cheap older hardware (6 port 5.1 amp and YCbCr TV) and this is the *only* DVD player that meets all those and DivX and USB - at a dirt cheap price. Tempted to get another for backup.

All in all much less hassle and cheaper than finding a Wireless Media center with a DVD player.

I got the $70 AWA player from BigW.

Have you tried connecting an ext.harddrive ? If not, could you do so and post a response stating if it plays files ok via USB slot ?

Sounds like a good machine for the price.:)

Unfortunately I don't have a ext usb hard drive, but I'll see if I can borrow one from work.

Given that the 4GB USB key worked fine I suspect a hard drive would as well, so long as it was FAT32. But I doubt the AWA USB could power a drive, so either a powered USB hub or a self powered drive.

Anyway, I'll let you know how it goes.
