Saw this in JB the other day ($160), here are some specs.

Does it have a good reputation for playing DivX files?
Will it support an external USB HDD?

The Mediatek 1389 chip is one of the better (if not the best) in the low to mid range, as long as it is implemented correctly (which I would imagine Pioneer would).
The chip itself only supports USB1.1, so if it does have USB, most 'standard' avi files might be a bit choppy in fast motion scenes.

Pretty much does what it says. I connected a FAT32 USB drive with a mixture of junk on it and a menu pops up asking whether you want divx or MP3/Jpeg. So if you want to switch between these media you need to go back to the menu and rescan the disk - strange but it does work.

Had issues with one drive where it would only discover the first file on the HDD but swapped the USB interface adapter on the HDD and it worked fine...

Highly recommended, there is a cheaper DV-300 version minus the HDMI function.

Damn, maybe i should've waited for these to come out rather than getting the Samsung 1080p7 which is getting fixed because widescreen movies aren't being rendered to fit the screen properly. Is the DV-600 out yet as well?

I got the Pioneer DV400Vs
so far so good have used a 2gb flash drive and a 250gb external drive with own power supply and both worked great $179 at Harvey Norman Carringbah

to honest im not sure but i will have a look what format its in
and get back to you , must go to work how. prob fat32

also just watched a full length movie (divx) from the 2 gb flash drive
and it did stop a couple of times audio kept going but picture just stoped,
i didnt have to do any thing it came back after a few seconds,
must be reading the flashdrive i think, other wise it worked great
no sync problems even after it stopped.

Have been using the DV-400V for 2 weeks.
It is very bad for CD-R DivX movies.
Almost all CD-R's will freeze the machine, requiring
power on/off at the wall. (All player function freezes).

Havent had a single problem so far with CDR. Check the quality of your burns.

why burn disks just get a cheap flash drive or better still a ex HDD,
and convert all to Divx

Guvnaar- No probs with TDK Gold CD_R over many years
with lots of players. Maybe I should get JB HI-FI to exchange
for another one.

Maybe try burning some of the problem videos to recordable DVD media (higher transfer rate than CD) to see if that fixes the problem.

Yes, I know DVDs will work fine, but I shouldnt have to do that.
A lot of people will have a big collection of movies on CDR like I do.
Even the crappiest DivX DVD player should play CDR.
I will exchange for a new one later in the week;
Hopefully I just got a bad machine (unlikely though, as no other probs with it)

so far only watched 1 full length movie(wild hogs) and it froze 3 time for about 5-10sec each time , audio kept playing and when vid came back it was all still in sinc,
I will try the ex HDD 250gb with own power supply next,

Upconversion!

I think upconversion or upscaling is very over rated.
A minor degree of upconversion can work
e.g. I have a high end Pioneer DVD player that upscales
DVD to 750P. This works well, but relies on very expensive
components in both the DVD player and Pioneer plasma.
Upscaling a DVD with this player to 1080P is likely to be
a dissapointment. (although have not seen it myself).
As the old saying goes; "You c'ant make a silk purse out
of a sow's ear", or something like that.
