One can only hope that they dumped this design on purpose. Gawd, it's ugly.

Yeah, doesn't really work for me neither.
The BA looked OK. I've never liked the look of the interior
of *any* Falcon I've ever seen.
Speaking of which, I've been instructed to start sanding back
the panels on the XM that is at the place I'm living at.

I'll take you for a ride in my XP Futura when it finished so you can
appreciate some *real* classic styling :)

I'm not big on the black around the headlights, but I don't mind the body as
it is. Certainly has *some* excitement value which is more than you can say
about the BF.

I thought that you were going to go and be a hermit on a pine plantation
for a few months starting over a month ago...
You were sooooooooo desparate to get away from Sydney and now you're
going to help restore an old falcon?

The crown vic is a classic bit of iron for 1972 , the v6 has more torque
than you might think if the courier is anything to go by and the new
auto is very smooth .

Lucky prick aren't you :>) What do you have to do to get to some *real*
classic styling? Can you tell me bit about it? Manual or 2 sp auto? My very
first car was a 63 XL sedan fitted with a Super Pursuit 200cu in motor with
3 on the tree. I had a lot of gearbox trouble with this car. I know the
"normal" Pursuit was 170 cu in.
This was the car I sold privately to a dude who wrote it off within a week
of buying it from me. I ended up going to the wreckers to buy back much of
the fitout I had done to it (things like a console with a transister radio
plus all the good gauges - oil pressure, battery and amp meter in it). I
sold this car to buy the XU-1 which you already know of.
Anyway, I have always wanted a 2 door XP hardtop but my options have now
just about run out. I often go to the Ford car shows and still drool over
the XP hardtops.

I have an XP Futura coupe that's currently in the throws of a "resto-mod".
Basically it'll be a standard looking body & interior (all in red), with
late model injected V8 engine,4 speed auto and custom front & rear
suspension & brakes.
Here's what it looked like the last time I did any work on it (which was a
while ago):

Looks like you're doing it properly anyway which is great to see. Shit if I
had half your experience at these things, I'd had it done ages ago. Will you
keep the interior (dash, flooring) in original set-up? I have seen a few of
these with the red upholstery and they look awesome. Good to see you putting
disc brakes F & R to suit the V8 as well. You might need to change the diff
as well because you might blow it up with the extra power to it but I'm sure
you will work that one out. Well done.

The interior will be all original, and I've already had the full interior
done by Paul & his father at Supertrim in Coburg. These guys have been in
the business since 1954, specialize in classic & vintage cars and it just so
happens that Paul is an early Falcon couple fanatic himself, and has a
complete set of master patterns for the XM & XP deluxe & Futura trim.
They've done the whole lot from headlining to tailored carpet, including a
new set of poly-welded door trims in the original pattern with new chrome
detailing. Cost a pretty penny at near on 5 grand for the complete interior,
but worth every cent in my opinion as their work is outstanding.
Mechanically the car will be running a shortened 9 inch rear with a custom
made 4 link, an injected 351 Windsor, a 4 speed auto and VT Commodore front
& rear brakes. I was going to run a turbo 700 behind the Windsor, but have
decided to swap it for a late model Ford electronic unit out of a wrecked
Fairlane (which is where I'll also be getting the fuel injection, power
steering and air conditioning from). Front suspension wise it's going to run
either a custom strut front based on VR/S Commodore struts, or a fabricated
upper & lower arm arrangement. I haven't decided on that yet as I need to
fit the engine to see how much I have to cut out of the spring towers to
allow for a decent set of pipes, and that will determine if there's enough
room left to run struts or go for the custom front end.
The strut system would be easier to make :)
I haven't worked on the thing for near on 18 months now, mainly because I've
been too busy earning some money doing jobs for other people. I'm starting
to get itchy about getting back onto it though, and will do as soon as I
can.

Yeah, their stuff's nice, and if I go with the strut front that's what I'll
be copying when I make it :)
I won't be buying it from them as they're as dear as poison. 2 grand for a
pair of basic struts is bordering on obscene.

They mentioned this on the Falcon history program. Apparently the US boss at
the time was not impressed with the lack of forsight by Australian engineers
helping to bring the Falcon to market here.

Holden and Valiant use the lower arm as load-bearing, meaning a lower spring
(or torque-rods). guess Ford had their reasons for sticking the spring on
top of the upper arm. Plus they used to brace the towers on some other
models (6cyl Cortys). More engine-bay clutter.

They're braced on the early Falcons too, and they need it. They're far from
the most rigid body around, and the coupes are especially prone to movement.
One of the downsides of fitting a proper front end is that you usually lose
the spring towers and braces, and that means extra work stiffening it all up
again.

What model 6cyl Cortina had tower braces??
I've owned TC and TD, Sister owned a TE and ex BIL owned a TF
all 6s and none had tower braces, in fact they had no towers as the
springs were on the lower A-Arms
Only Ford I've seen with tower braces were the early 60s Falcons and
Mustangs
