View Full Version : RTA Converting speed cameras to 2-way

Noticed the other night that the RTA fixed speed camera on Newcastle Rd
Lambton is being converted from only measuring the speed of cars going
one way to do both directions across a total of 5 lanes.
Given that the signage has been there in both directions for years and
everybody in Newcastle knows that it only works one way, I'd guess that
there's going to be a lot of infringements coming up real soon.
It leads me to wonder how many of the older camera installations are
going to be re-worked to covert from one-way to two-way without any
need to change the signage, since it's already there...

Wonder if they're going to convert the cameras on the M4. They have
one camera for each way. If they converted each of them to bi-
directional, I'm sure they'll snap quite a few there who leave it late
to slow down for the camera on their side of the road.

Duh...
Seems to me that there's been a purchase of the next 'marque' of cameras.
The new ones are capable of discriminating between to and fro.
The old ones will be placed on freeways where only one direction of
travel is indicated.
Of course a decent opposition in the parliament might fire off a series
of questions, WITH notice, after the fashion of the following:
So, when were they bought?
From whom?
How much money was expended?
Were they subsidised in any way by 'any' non GovCo group?
Are the numbers going to be made available in the audit reports of GovCo?
For any particular camera, for a start, and then for all cameras.
and.
How much revenue has been generated by the cameras being replaced in the
12 month. What is toe projected earnings capacity of those particular
cameras over the next 12 months?
Of course, to really tell whether these devices are earning their keep,
there are quite a few figures required.
How many notices in the past 12 months? How much money is involved.
How many of those notices had guilty pleas via payment? How much was paid?
How many of those notices had not been paid? What is outstanding?
How many of those notices currently before the courts? What's that worth?
How many of those notices have been through the courts, and paid as a
result? How much was paid in that exercise? - Totals to include reference
to actual penalties and court costs.
From all notices generated by automatic means, received revenue...
And so on.
For instance - precisely how many licences were suspended in <<pick a
State>> based solely on speeding penalties.
Grouped by ones that included detection by Mr Plod, and ones sourced
entirely by automatic detection.
It should be noted that GovCo's are using the various StaySafe Committees
and their ilk to get oppositions Into_The_Game so questions such as those
above are NOT asked in the parliament.
A FOI request for all that would no doubt take a few years to get a
result on. I'd also hazard a guess that there's be a claim of commercial
in confidence hard up the arse of the FOI request, thus totally meriting
the panacea advanced for the problem in another recent thread:-)

Doubt it. There are already cameras on both sides. To run both cams
both ways, they'd have to shift the signs to before the first one and
that might be too much of a clue.
I think it's more about the locations that have signage both ways but
only one camera covering one way so far.

Interesting you say this, I actually meant to post about this about a
fortnight ago. I can confirm that Henry Lawson Drive, Picnic Point and
Gibson Rd Padstow are both converted with many more to come. A mate of
mine learned the hard way on HLD, got done and is waiting for the
infringement... I also have a mate in the know who has told me a lot are
getting converted.. So looks like a lot of the single lane roads with
cameras will be working in both directions.
Interestingly the two cameras I mentioned, and at least one more out
Bonnyrigg, Hoxton Park way have all had their flash units removed for
some weeks, at least before conversion of the two I mentioned. I
suspected we just had another disgruntled motorist in attack mode but
now I wonder if it was actually some sort of testing phase.
So everybody look for the new patch of asphalt and slow down!
