i was talking to a freind from SoCal a while back and he said that he downloaded some software taht allowed him to copy games directly to his xbox & run them without even needing the disks. Where can i find this software... and do i need to buy a modchip or anythign to make it work? Thanks for any help

You will need a modchip or Exploit done, and its a good idea to get a larger HDD (as the standard xbox hDD will not store many games) check the trading post in your area.
The software to use is XBOX2DVD, most installers will install it when you get your modchip or exploit done.
It is Illegal to copy or backup games you do not legally own!!!
