Oh, and are you sure that the program you are viewing actually has
subtitles?

I think he's of the opinion that everything comes with sub-titles,
which they don't. Easiest way to check if there enabled is to switch
to an SBS movie.
As you say the TV has nothing to do with it, unless there is
something in the Teletex menu which display's it. ??

I obviously should have been more precise when posting my original post.
I can see subtitles on dozens of programs but only if I view using SD
though my Topfield. I should also have the option of just using the TV
on either SD or HD broadcasts by itself for viewing them especially
since its supposed to be a top TV. The reason you pay more to have a
top TV is to get more not less features.

I have a Samsung 42" with built in HDTV tuner and it displays subtitles on
HD channels (when they exist) along with my Topfield 5000 when I'm using it.

Oh, OK, I didn't realise the TV had an integrated digital tuner. So it
doesn't display subtitles on either HD or SD broadcasts? Sounds strange. Is
there no menu option to enable them?

There is no mention of being able to display them in either the manual
or in the on screen setup screens. I'm assuming that they aren't there
which I think is ridiculous.

Well the uk version of (Sony KDL46X2000) has a Digital Set-up menu with a
subtitles setting see page 38 of this manual (6MB):-
http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/2698671121.pdf

Hope that helps (can't find Australian manual on sony.com.au).

This seems to suggest that in Australia Sony has decided to cut corners
& only sell a watered down version of this set. It's strange that they
choose to stick with the same model #. I wonder what else they have
left off the set? The next time I'm shopping for an electrical appliance
I'll know to stay well away from the Sony shop.

Wild guess: legislative requirements are different in the UK so they
have to provide caption support there and don't have to here, and the
systems are different enough (even just a different teletext codepage
would be enough excuse!) they they decided to just drop it.

Caption support more broadly is going to get worse and worse with
the take-up of online digital media. I don't think anyone is providing
captioned downloadable content at the moment and it's going to be a
whole different fight.

But nowhere in any Menu with "Setup Settings" or "Digital Set-up" or similar
sounding name, do you have an option for subtitles or closed captions or
caption vision ?

Clutching at straws! is there no mention of subtitles on the remote control?
Sounds just like the lame STB that Aldi were selling to change the aspect
ratio, you had to drive down several layers of menu's to get to it instead
of just putting a button the remote like nearly everyone else does

Here is what the DBA website has to say on the subject of caption
support:

Receiving Equipment

Caption decoding and display is a requirement for compliance with the
Australian Standard for television receivers (AS 4933). Industry
compliance with Australian standards is not mandatory.

And if it's not mandatory, some bozo will always decide not to implement
it if they can save a few bucks.

That said, so long as there are plenty of good units out there that
*do* implement it, it doesn't really matter. Unless this is something
you need but you were careless enough to spend a big chunk of money
without checking first.
