My old Omni is dying so i'm hunting for a replacement DivX DVD player. I'd prefer one that I could buy from a store in Adelaide, although the thread by maximux_minimus talks about bargains on the net.

The only units I have found to date are an MTV4070 ($99 from Coles) with USB and HDMI and a similarly featured Highlander DVX-5850 from Strathfield at the same price. There is also another Highlander at Strathfield for $79 (no HDMI or USB).

Does anyone have any comments about the relative merits of these units? or have suggestions for other units?

Going from personal experience, I know of one person who had 2 MTV units replaced and eventually got a full refund after all kinds of technical problems and I have a Highlander which was being sold online about 18 months ago and it's still going reasonable well after all this time.

I think I may have read here somewhere that the newer model Highlander had problems playing multi-session discs. I don't have that problem with my older version.

Philips is the best you can get for the money. They do a model that upscales to 1080 I/P through HDMI and comes with a usb 1.1 port. They also have Divx 6.0 which means they support the tricky avi files with multible audio or sub streams. The usb 1.1 goes ok most of the time with avi files,it might stutter on the odd occasion in a realy fast moving action sequence but for the other 95% of the time the convenience of dropping and dragging files to a flash drive rather than burn to disc makes it worth it.Don't try and watch dvd VOB files through the usb 1.1 though cause your just dreamin. They can go arse up from time to time on a power board issue but there policy is a no questions asked replacement or refund if it fails in the 12 months warranty.I sold mine to a mate with no internet and he still gets me give him new avi files every week :|

Thanks for your replies :)
BTW I should have mentioned that the MTV supports resolution up to 720p/1080i...

[EDIT] However the box gives no indication that it's a multi region player, and the customer support line weren't sure either!

I stuffed up my Zensonic Z340 when i was upgrading the firmware and now the tray won't even open up and i don't know how to reset it so i'm also in the market for a new player.

I need a DivX player with external sub support (srt, idx) and h.264 codec playback along with the usual avi, ogm and mkv support...any recommendations?

Shame about the Zen ,i'm running the 500 atm.It has emergency firmware recovery for such an occasion i think but that wouldn't help you if the tray won't open .The 500 is not so cheap and to be honest it is a bit of a mixed bag with things i love about it and things i hate.I know it doesn't support mkv atm but the firmware 2.0 is due out soon so that maybe addressed in the update. It will of course stream any codec you have on your pc through the wired or wireless network.h.264 i think it does.I have d/led sample 1080P files off the net and can get them to play fine through the optical drive(specs say it only supports up to 1080i so i guess it down converts them to i:confused:).They do stutter through the usb 2.0 though for some reason. As far as avi's go thats one of the things that the 500 does well as i would say my d/loads look better on my display from the 500 than any other player i have tried.DVD playback is a bit quirky and you have to put up with a bit of frustration until you work them out :p.I do love having all my fave dvd's ripped to a 500 gb drive sitting back playing anything i feel like through the usb 2.0.Getting up to change a dvd is a thing of the past :boonie:

Thanks for the info eric, the USB issue wouldn't bother me too much as i would do my movie watching via burned DVD's full of avi files on them :)

I think at the moment the Z500 is a bit too much for me, i might go for something simpler and more similar to the Z340 instead, as i still have my XBMC anyway.

I'm considering the LG DVD276 or the LG DV298H...
