Just bought the above SD tuner and a 250Gig HHD to make it a PVR. Also a GIEC Dual format dvd recorder from Strathfield (total $310).

Read part of the manual and asks for the HDD to be formated. What format should it be??? or doesn't it matter?????

Does any one have this DVD recorder or PVR setup and what is it like?

cheers!

Hi all

I was given a product sample of the Dvx-555u to test and comment honestly on its benefits and flaws

The review is at DVX-555U SD Digital Set Top Box (STB) PVR (Review) (http://www.bhatt.id.au/blog/dvx-555u-sd-digital-set-top-box-stb-pvr-review/)

If you have any suggested additions or modifications to the review please post them in the article's comments section and I will pass them on to the manufacturer

thanks

Good review.

As my first PVR back in Auust 2008, I'm glad to say I'm very happy with it. Bought it for $69 and a 250G hard drive for $80. A cheap PVR IMO. Does almost all that I want and is easy to use. I bought it for myself to record the footy. Ends up my Wife uses it more than me! So it is easy to use.

Simple to timer record, but like any timer recording, you need to allow for the now common practice of TV stations inablity to meet scheduled times! They typically run late. So tend to use EPG (which does take a little time to download/read/update) then add 9 mins or so to the length of recording time.

Bought a cheap DVD recorder so that I can burn DVDs of what I want to keep/make portable. The biggest down side to it is that you can only slow record (1:1). Would be nice if there was some digital output to copy to the laptop and then burn the disk at a faster rate. If someone knows how to do this with out ripping out the hard drive, let me know please. The USB only allows input of data not output (as I understand)

Other issue is that it doesn't have a skip button so that you can go forward/backward 5 min at a time. Cos fast forwarding x32 to the last Quater of the Footy is a pain.

Can't record and watch another show, which can be a pain on a rare occasion. You need to watch the AV signal.

Think it was great bang for buck and will consider buying another one for the other TV. Unless someone could recomend something better.

It is No frills but only $150 is cheap. But I generally don't have time to muck around with bells and whistles that don't add too much to the viewing quality. You may pay double or more and only gain 10%-20% more features that you actually use.
