.... only has a 1.4L fuel tank. WTF? I hope it's a very efficient
engine then (Victa 4-stroke).
Anyone else bought a mower recently?

Yep.
A Victa with a Briggs & Stratten 4 stroke. Fuel tank, I'd guess, would
be about same as yours and it runs for about 2 hours at full throttle
(BTW full throttle on a lawn-mower is nothing like full throttle in a
car; I'm guessing full throttle is set at where the torque peaks).
Also, being 4-stroke, be wary if you are mowing a large area that is
on a slope; not a good idea apparently (don't know if this applies to
some brands or all 4 strokes). Need to mix it up a bit. ;-)

That sounds alright then. Just as long as I'm not stopping to fill up
every half hour.

This mower feels even less revvy than the last one. I think I read
somewhere that by law the blades of a lawnmower can't spin faster than
3500RPM. Don't know about the engine itself though.

The ride-on does the bulk of the area. The push mower is just for
tricky bits and small places the ride-on can't get to. So it's going
to spend it's life being tilted on all sorts of angles, but never for
very long on each angle.

Hmm my electric bitza only does 1450rpm, with only a 1kw motor

Exactly, although the slope would need to be fairly severe and the
area quite large. If you mix it up there shouldn't be a problem. It's
just one of those things where someone starts explaining it to you and
pretty soon you start thinking "oh yeah.....of course!"

It was years ago that I read this... maybe I just heard it? So yeah I
wouldn't take it as fact. I just thought someone might be able to
confirm it if I said it.

Petrol engines are not the best. Just keep in store
some fuel.
I've got the shites with the Talon lines trimmer I own,
this week i threw away a BS lawn mower.

This is my home fuel situation (actual amounts vary according to
usage):
5L of 50:1 two-stroke (line trimmer)
5L of 25:1 two-stroke (chainsaw)
20L of PULP (mowers)
20L of diesel (Hilux and occasionally flame thrower for blackberry
bushes)
:-)

I bought a Talon mulcher once. The simple act of bolting it together
caused it to break. Seriously.

Haven't seen many diesel mowers. Or rather, I haven't seen many diesel
PUSH mowers, Dad's got a 25hp ride-on that runs diesel. But it's more of
a tractor really...

A few years ago one of them enviro mowers that runs on a rechargeable
battery. Its even got a Ipod holder so I can listen to some tunes whilst
mowing. :-)

Could be right because my electrics a bit on the undersized/gutless side,
though, I don't think the blades need to spin any faster

Does ok?, I considered a recahargebale, but the leads not that bad when you

Yeah it does quiet well actually although I wouldn't use it for heavy
duty grass though. but I can do at least an hours worth of mowing out of
it before it needs a recharge. Luckily it only takes me 45 minutes to mow
my lawn (in between beers and or doing a decent job of it). :-)

I recently bought a Victa with a B&S 4 stroke. I'd guestimate it to be about
1.5L in the fuel tank. Gets the whole yard done - about 45 minutes of
mowing - and still has a decent amount left in the tank. I haven't run it
out yet, so I don't know how long it would run on a full tank.

Yeah that's something else I noticed about this, compared to the old victa 2
stroke the abo's pinched. The old one would rev a lot harder than this one
does. Also this one seems to be an all-or-nothing type deal. Throttle it
back to an idle, and it doesn't seem significantly slower than at full revs.
It's also a lot more gutless than the old 2 stroke was - hit a bunch of long
grass hard and it stalls.

I presume you mean the risk of the oil not getting to all the places it
needs to. I wouldn't imagine that would be a major problem considering the
engines have a vertical crank. The oil would get splashed around pretty well
inside the engine. The biggest problem I have with mine is that when you
get it on an angle it seems to starve for fuel. I don't think the carby is
the best on it. Lately it has started starving for fuel even when on the
level - it'll go fine for half an hour then starts cutting it out. Push the
prime button and it'll take off again for 5 minutes or so.

About five years ago. I don't have much grass so it doesn't see much
service, I think it's a Rover, I know for sure it is four stroke and I think
it's a B&S motor.
I do know that three presses of the fuel primer and one rip of the cord
starts it every time though.
The only thing that has ever gone wrong is when the linkage setup at the
carb fucked up after ripping it to pieces during some vigourous mowing under
a bush and the catcher could be bit bigger.
Paid $329 for it on special at bunnings.

I've got one with a B&S 4 stroke as well (Sprint 375 - regulars might
remember me posting about a revving problem it had, which I still
haven't looked at properly btw) - and mine seems to be all or nothing
as far as revs go as well. It also stalls if you hit a decent patch
of grass with it, but behaves much better if you don't bother with the
catcher (as the grass accumulating seems to clog things, causing it to
stall).
