Had a near miss the other night. Backing out of a slot in a shopping
centre carpark, and a guy behind me (in the opposite row) was also
backing out. It was dark, and he had no reverse lights. Anyway, we
saw each other before anyone hit anything, and both moved back in a
bit. He let me go first. I did a quick duck around to make sure I
could tell him that he had no reverse lights - he thanked me, and we
went on our ways.

Funny thing - as I was backing into my driveway to park, I noticed
that I, too had no reverse light! Bloody lucky we didn't hit each
other, really - I was in the Datsun roadster (ie, very low car) and he
was in a late 90's Navara with a canopy on the back (ie, higher
vehicle with poor rear vision).

Check your lights tonight, guys!

Cheers,
Steve

Maate, I can pretty much assure you that short of a 'strobe on a pole'
reversing light on your Datsun, the Navara driver wouldn't have seen you
*at_all* until you appeared in one of his outside mirrors..and thta was
lucky, because the designers of most common or garden variety 1 tonners
don't figure the driver needs to see stuff like kerbs near the rear of
the vehicle.
BTW, the 'why?' is that the field of view of the mirrors being that way
is quite opposed to the obstruction to forward and side direct vision:-)
Yeah, and I also know GovCo is determined to have builders of all convex
mirrors strung up by the balls.

I'd just like to point out that significantly convex passenger side mirrors
and slightly convex UN-ECE compliant driver's side mirrors have been legal
for several years...

I use the mirror-effect of some large panes of glass in shops etc to check
my rear-lights. Was disgusted to note the Camry uses those spastic baseless
bulbs with 2 pissy wires bent up against the bulb-base for front parkers and
probably the courtesy-blinkers>>front guards.. Shithouse idea. The wagons
ahve some sort of current-imbalance detector to let you know a rear
park/brake light is out. Gives enough trouble for many owners to bypass
them, tho.

I was backing out of the local shopping carpark in the XJ6.
I woman braked suddenly and when I back out, she yelled out "Your
reversing lights don't work!", I yelled back, "Do the stop lights work".
She said "Yes!", I then said, "Well that's a bonus". She gave me a
strange look, she obviously doesn't know about Lucas electrics :-)

The brake lights on a relatives vehicle don't work - I have no
understanding
of how how it recently passed rego check. Only the rear one on the
parcel
shelf works. I'll have to take a look at it.

Higher vehicles doesn't mean rear vision is worse. A 1996 Celica I've
had
to drive was attrocious compared with my 4x4 'lux. This was confirmed
by
it's owner needing to be guided in and out of the garage, whereas I
can see
reversing my 'lux out (just gotta watch the right hand mirror to see
what's
happening on the right side driving in :-(

Yep, absolutely. I have always had to use the effect of lining up the
reflection
of the headlamps for example against the bull bar when needing to park
in confined spaces to get the needed 1 cm to 2 cm clearance. I can
fairly
much see for reversing. That said a couple of months ago cracked a
tail
light lense - it needed cracked as it was old and faded. My tail
lights now
get a "fuck that is bright" from a friend. I replaced the globes in
the other
side after replacing the broken unit, as it looked kind of more than a
lot
different. I might buy a new unit for the other side, although it
looks OK
ATM, although a bit faded.

Headlamps, I've got to do something about, dim as all hell, and sealed
beam.

clue about 'em either! :-)

Cheers,

(Finally sorted out 2 year old electric problem on the Datto - so I

And stupid!
However ignorance is not a given factor..
Most likely drives a 10+ year old Holden Commodore.

Most of the stupid comments I get are from bogans in old Holden
Commodores with their hat on back to front.
