The next-generation Falcon due in early 2008 will not be built in left-
hand drive for overseas markets, reports BRUCE NEWTON.

And fuck off Oz I didn't write the article so you can cram your pedantic
bullshit up your clacker.

More journalese. How does 'no LHD' mean 'no exports'?

I often wonder, would you prefer that Australia was a LHD market? I
would, simply to make imports easier. I can think of plenty of cars
that are available in LHD ONLY while the only ones that I can think of
that are RHD ONLY are Australian anyway.
>From memory, Sweden changed from RHD to LHD back in the 50's or 60's.
Our roads infrastructure basically rules it out anyway.
..............we'd all have to learn to carry jousting swords in our
left arms! ;-p

Actually, the more I think about it............
If we were LHD there probably wouldn't be a local industry; we'd have
always just imported direct from Europe and the States. The
implications are more far reaching than you'd think ;-/

I couldn't care less to be honest.

Most of the cars that are left had drive that I'd like to own are classics
and can be driven here in original LHD configuration anyway.

Pretty easy to do when your country's the size of Ballarat and has all of 37
cars :)

There was a stupid rumor going around a couple of years ago that reported
that Australia was going to convert to left hand drive to conform to an
international vehicle & traffic code, and all that was required for the road
network was the signage to be changed to face the other way and the traffic
lights adjusted.

The kids who thought that one up obviously didn't think about the 10+
million rhd cars already in existence :)

I think a local industry would have always existed regardless of what side
of the road we drove on, purely from an economics point of view.

Most of the cars made here are/were done so because it was cheaper to do
that rather than import them, and while that may not ring quite as true
today as it did in years gone by there's obviously still some value in it
otherwise Toyota wouldn't have a huge manufacturing plant not far from me
making Camry's for export.

Remember the April Fools joke about a country (can't remember which one)
converting - beginning with buses and taxis one year, with private cars
converting a year later?

If they just did taxis first, nobody would have noticed :)

That's because various governments decided that they would make this
so, with tariffs and subsidies.

Why is was is largely irrelevant. The point being that is was cheaper to
build them here rather than import them.
