The 1st edition of the melways from 1966 online. My street didn't even exist
then (neither did I :-)

I'd still prefer my satnav to find my "drive-in theatres" :-)

Raises an interesting Q as to how the hard copy map
books sales are going these days? I don't buy map books
any more.

Yes. And I have to collect on the weekend from
the friend I lent satnav to. The main problem is I removed
map book from vehicle, after installing satnav, then lent
satnav to friend.

Right and you also drive a commodore ??

Nope, only driven one once in my life, it was
on loan. Ack, no two, the V8 one too.

I only tend to drive 'luxen, Smurf,
or my full length 'lux version.

The odd 'rolla, but I hate that.

Celica I sometimes have to move about,
but I hate that too.

Just a quick glance at my figures suggests that the sales we've had at
my store are not yet being impacted by sat-nav system sales. It's
rare that someone looking for a Melways can be converted to a
satellite navigation sale. I daresay that a decline in sales over the
next years is likely, though.

Cheers,
Steve

I think so, I bought one, my father is about to, and I think
his friend is (or has) bought a satnav.

Not until the data supplied for the GPSes starts to actually provide
enough accuracy to be on par with a paper map.

They appear to be a long way off so far.

So putting the "map book" (otherwise known in Oz as a street directory) back
in the car is something you find difficult to do in the mean time?

Probably the Senseless data set. I couldn't find home with it.

The datasets for Germany and Switzerland were *much* better. Locate
to within about 20 metres of a street address. General points of
interest were within about 10 metres.

Nothing was the hundreds of metres off like street addresses using
Senseless.

I've sent feedback to various sites that use senseless data telling
them of major holes in their data but it doesn't seem to ever make
its way back to correcting the underlying data.

They do have my address quite accurate, but going hybrid map and
aerial photo on google maps sees the photos overlaid a full block
out of place...

I sent corrections for crap like this:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=9003011444570959183,-34.506200,150.309670%3B14168303524781934056,-34.524730,150.292540%3B13450452942079798278,-34.524750,150.292570%3B14400638525461016190,-34.566780,150.322980&time=&date=&ttype=&saddr=Hume+Hwy+%40-34.506200,+150.309670&daddr=Hume+Hwy+%40-34.524730,+150.292540+to:Unknown+road+%40-34.524750,+150.292570+to:Illawarra+Hwy+%40-34.566780,+150.322980&sll=-34.524798,150.29243&sspn=0.001965,0.00335&ie=UTF8&ll=-34.527419,150.30035&spn=0.062863,0.107203&z=14&om=1

months ago and it hasn't been fixed...

Some data that was fixed in the past has since been returned to very
inaccurate. I guess that having mapping data that showed that the
Pacific goat track was slower than Bucketts Way, Thunderbolts Way,
New England Hwy and Cuntinghams Hwy from Hexham to Brisbane didn't
suit them so they again put the travel times for the fully sealed
100km/h Thunderbolts Way down to averaging about 40km/h...

I think satnavs will need to become very inexpensive before most people
would consider one in favor of a street directory.

And a whole lot better :)

Yeah, I think so too.

I've got three or four friends with one, and whenever I ask them if they're
any good they always respond with "yeah, but..."

That's the case even in melbourne metro areas. I noticed it especially
as the overlap was near a mates place and I cut n pasted a few pics
together to give him a blurry overhead picture of his home, and a
satirical cc to the vic police **(didn't actually send, not that it'd
matter he's clean) with 'meth lab here' and an arrow.

I would imagine that it relies on the data that the map makers provide. For
example, when we had property out of town Vicroads maps didn't show it. And this
was a pain for when trying to get stuff delivered, too. Often the courier would
give us a call and ask where our street was.

5 years on and it's still not on any map that I can find, nor is it in the
latest Sensis/Whereis based GPS maps.

Also, lots of rural roads out there that are missing, including a significant
highway from our place to the beach. Others have the wrong names, or go in the
wrong places.

And Melbourne CBD doesn't get off, either. Lots of errors in and around the CBD
including places like St Kilda, around RCH near Carlton.

> Nothing was the hundreds of metres off like street addresses using
> Senseless.

I've seen some whoppers but for the most part it's been pretty good with getting
you to a specific street address.

Thing is, Sensis, Whereis or Whoever needs to look at the rectification of the
rural maps errors.

They'll need to become as ubiquitous as mobile phones before that happens, and
as accepted.

And so that you can leave 'em in the car without too much risk of them being
knocked off. But then, druggies will steal anything for their next fix, I
s'pose...

I remember when I got my first phone. Reactions where either that I'm a yuppy,
or that I must own a business or that I have too much money to waste.

Funny how the same critics today can't get by without their phones.

Pretty much.

I can happily live without mine, and in fact just told Telstra to shove mine
up their blurter and canceled the number I've had for the last 12 years or
so.

Anyone wanna buy an I-mate pocket PC phone edition cheap? :)

A hundred bucks.

Comes complete with all accessories like desktop stand, USB link, car
charger, original documentation & software, hands free headset, and leather
case. Also has an optional long life battery, aluminium hard case, and has
been flashed to run WM2005 (which it does very reliably)

It's almost the same phone as the current I-mate or O2 Jam which sells for a
grand.

It's a great pocket PC, and having the phone built into it makes it very
useful, but in the last few months I've used it twice, and now that I've
arseholed my mobile I'll use it even less.
