Well, it's a Drake Offenhauser, after all - but I'd hesitate to call it
'early';-)

Looks like an Offenhauser, or a modern variant of it.

Popular Indianapolis engine in the early part of last century.

No idea, but I remember seeing a docu on Foxtel some time ago that briefly
mentioned it, and if I recall correctly the race engine was derived from an
earlier version that was marinised, and itself inspired by some early
European thing.

I imagine they'd be pretty rare today.

Came across it sorting images I've downloaded over the years (mostly
from photographic sites). Most are just photographs, with no detailed
information on the subject. This one's no exception.

It's an "Offy" however.

It was in production for around 50 years (1930 - 1980). Started out
as the Miller engine, became Offenhauser around 1933, changed to
Meyer-Drake circa 1950. Wiki has an article on its history....

Miller probably deserves more credit for the original design than
Offenhauser (who was a Miller employee at the time)....

A significant part of the design is that the idea for a dohc
multi-valve engine came from a 1913 Peugot (just in case anyone thinks
it's modern technology). :)

Lived near a speedway for a short period in my youth (you got in free
near the end of the night). I've heard 'em go (and even touched the
odd one). :)

AFAIK they used the very early ones for dirt track, and many were
still racing into the 1970's (as were the J head conversion model A
Fords). The Offy's mostly belonged to visiting Yanks.

If I had one it'd be polished and live in an air-conditioned glass case.
Anyway, it's originally a French GP motor, so polishing it wouldn't be a
capital offence?:-)

Character up this way name of Shepherd had a 'cesco' Chev speedcar. As
opposed to a sprint machine, that is.
Sounded like a 4.
Was it? Did the yanks actually manage to cobble together *2* decent four
cylinder engines?Don't know anything much about them, but the
(commentator blather uber-expensive) machine seemed to behave impeccably
on the track.
I recall he was doing a practice thrash pre-start, and had the thing at
flat-chat into and half way round the southern corner of the Ecca track.
He went off the throttle, didn't move his paws or the wheel *at_all*, and
the damm thing didn't change it's attitude/angle on the track by even a
poofteenth of an inch.
Fucken incredible.

To get a road car that good?
Yes, well. I've been trying ever since;-)
