View Full Version : Anybody using Canon 50/1.2 or 50/1.4?

With my eyes still playing up, I am considering replacing my Olympus
50/1.2 that I use via an adapter on my Canon. (Manual focus naturally)

Currently I have two methods of confirming focus with my Oly lenses
(split screen & focus confirm adapter) but nothing is as easy as the
lens just doing it all itself. So as much as I love my Oly I am
considering replacing it with either the Canon 50/1.2 or perhaps the
cheaper 1.4.

Is anyone using either of these lenses and if so, do you have some
sample images (or crops) that I could view?

Cheers

Rusty

My weapon of choice in the 50mm prime range is the 1.4. While I'm
generally satisfied with it I don't have any shots to offer you to
prove that... HOWEVER with pBase you can search by hardware type.
Oddly there doesn't seem to be a search available for the 1.2 but
there are a bunch of images for the 1.4:

There ARE some example photos that you can find by just searching for
the 1.2's name, though:

Thanks... I am not a pbase user, so didn't think of that.

I did find a thread on DPR that showed some excellent stuff with the
1.2 http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1029&message=24395821

A few threads on there suggest that the 1.4 halos wide open... are you
able to confirm?

I just had another play with my Oly and it really is an f2 lens....
f2+ and it is amazing, but below and it's nothing like those Canon 1.2
samples. :-(

I've just gone through all of the shots that I've taken with it (many
of which were taken with it wide open), and can see no evidence of
that... BUT I'm probably not the best one to give you a view on that.
I've used mine in only a pretty narrow range of work; mostly indoor
portraiture. (Which I suck at, so I don't do a vast amount of it.) But
no, no evidence of it that I can see when used with my 300D. I've yet
to use it with my 40D.

Photo Zone has write ups on both.

Here is a full-size pic from the 50 f/1.2.

Hi Rusty,

Take a look at SLR Gear: http://www.slrgear.com/reviews/index.php
This site has tests of the 50mm 1.2, 1.4 and 1.8.

Unless you *really* need the extra speed, you might find the 50 1.8 will do all you need and save you a mint.

Cheers

Thanks for the help and links everyone. It's always a toughie to make
decisions like this, so pulling in a few faves from mates, I will get
to shoot some of my own tests this week with a 50/1.2, 1.4 and a
"plastic fantastic" 1.8 I really don't like the feel and plastic
mount of the 1.8, but everyone raves about the IQ, so at the price it
might be hard to ignore. Plus at the price, I guess it could be
treated as a throw-away if the mount or barrel wears out.

Cheers

Rusty
