If you intend to do any gaming keep in mind the 40GB model won't play PS2 games

There are no brand new 60gb PS3 consoles left in Sydney.
As for the 40gb models, Im sure Myer has them for $688 and you get a mail in card to get 3 blu-ray titles. Harvey Norman I'm sure has close to the same deal with the 3 titles via mail in redemption.
At K-Mart the console is $599 when you buy Fight Night Round 3 for $99. So a total purchase of $698
Also at the store called GAME if you trade in a PS2 or Xbox + 15 games you can buy a PS3 for $299.
The 80gb models, which have to be imported, have software emulation only, so not all PS2 and PS1 titles are backwards compatible. Also be aware that if you import a console the backwards compatibility is region locked, so if you buy a US PS3 you can only play US PS1 & PS2 titles.
I personally sold my AU 60gb model a month ago and purchased a US 60gb model for A$569 2 weeks ago.

cool...where did you import it from laddy?
the only concern i have in importing one is warranty, don't want to open the box and find it dead.
