A friend just bought one from Aldi (Tevion) for $999 on special, so I
assume around $1200 normally. It's a 32" LCD with integrated HD tuner
and a Samsung panel. Looked pretty good to me.

Probably not, seeing as it's a Samsung panel :-)

That's much smaller than 32 inch as the OP requested.

I got a 32" LG LCD TV about a month ago.
with HDTV and digital inside with all the bells and whistles.
At a steal at $1,300 (down from $2,300),I'm as happy as a pig in shit.
The ONLY problem is that with Austar, some programming is blurry and the textures are and can be quite rich which I must add is not the fault of the TV's.
The FTA reception is brilliant and I can't wait for the extra channels to come forth.

I have found some improvement to the Austar signal by whacking the
svideo output from their receiver into a DVD recorder and outputting
that in progressive component.
Maybe it's a fake improvement and my imagination wants my eyes to
believe it, but to me it seems to make the most of a somewhat ordinary
lot.

Jim,I do have AV's from the Austar box to the DVD-VCR then an s-video to the back of the TV.
I never thought about your suggestion before so I'll let you know how it goes after this Tuesday (or unless I can dig out an S-video I have had for years and not knowing what the hell it was used for until now!..were ever it is!)
