Hi all
I recently bought a Tedelex TE-S5701DVD and was attracted to its DivX playback from USB 2.0 and from 7 supported card types. The specs are posted below. I don't know what chipset it uses.
The Good
I can playback Xvid encoded AVIs via a USB 2GB memory drive, or copied to 2GB SD or CF. There is faultless playback by this method with large movie-length AVI files, even for long durations (approx 4 hours).
I haven't yet tested whether it can access an externally powered HD plugged into the USB 2.0.
The same Xvid encoded AVI files I have burnt to CD-Rs and they play faultlessly.
The Bad
I have also burnt (via Nero and DVD Movie factory) the same Xvid encoded AVI files to DVD-R, DVD+R (TDKs and Verbatims) and have encountered skipping faults when played back on the S5701DVD. At first I thought it was the type of media I was using or writing software, and therefore tested different brands on different types of media using either Nero or DVD Movie factory. The same avi files play faultlessly on the PC DVD-ROM and another DVD component player.
After contacting Tedelex support from their website (South Africa), and asking for any firmware updates to support the product which might address the issue of not being able to play AVIs from DVDs, I have been told that "the unit will only play back avi files off a cdr and is not compatible with DVDROM."
To my limited knowledge, this sounds a bit odd. Are there really differences or incompatibilities in how the data streams from a CD-R than from a DVD that a firmware update cannot fix? Perhaps this was just a product oversight and is the reason why it has reached the budget clearinghouse.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts or fixes on the matter.
