I was looking at engine oil last night, and I noticed that a "diesel
oil" still was rated as SL (Spark ignition engine oil class "L") as well
as CH (the diesel rating)

So my question is: does this mean that it's fine to use in a petrol
engine, is there actually any difference between diesel and petrol
engine oil, other than the pretty packaging and the price?

the old (and by old I mean he was 60+)mechanic at a former employer used
Diesel oil in all his vehicles, from his Harley right up to his wife's
Camry, he said it was the first thing he did when he got a new car, drain
out the OEM stuff and put Dextron (or equivalent) in them.

I run Delo400 in my 308 ute. It needs a ferking good clean out and
appears to be getting healthier each oil change.

Delo400 is meant to be top of the range in diesel engine oils. Okay,
I'll change that to "among the best" before I get flamed to death.

Dextron is Caltexs diesel motor oil. From all accounts a very good one that
a lot of truckies used.

Neither of those are the most recent API ratings... which are CI-4 for
diesel and SM for petrol. CH-4 is also a pretty old rating (1998).
IIRC the change to CI-4 relates to exhaust emissions.

The additive packages will most likely have a different emphasis... eg
detergents, dispersants, etc, will be present in different
proportions, which probably means you'll end up paying for something
you don't need. However I'm also aware of at least one instance where
an identical oil is sold under two different labels... both according
to the oil company rep I deal with and according to the detailed spec
sheet (which shows identical specifications for both). It's probably
the exception rather than the rule though, and nor does that
particular oil carry the most recent ratings for either petrol or
diesel.

FWIW I've generally had much better results running petrol oils in
light duty diesels than the other way around. I've also known a lot
of fleet owners who do it that way, and none that run diesel oil in
petrol engines as a matter of course.

DOHHH
no Scotty
Dextron is their ATF
DELO is the diesel engine oil

and I used to use it in all my cars, diesel and petrol

I don't use it in the BA because it need a 10W20 oil not 15W40

Caltex also made an oil called "Tractor 1" it was for use on all farm
equipment and was a "one oil for everything" Engine, Transmission,
Hydraulic it did the lot
not sure if they still make it

I know a few people who use diesel oils as a "flush" oil. They reckon
that the higher detergent content and anti-sooting is good for
cleaning out gunk, so they'll run it for one change. Whether this is
a good idea or not, I couldn't say.

All said and done, *if* a particular oil is the right viscocity, and
it meets the requirements of your engine as far as API and/or ACEA
specs, then go for it - but I think that if a diesel oil is rated to
SL, you're probably going to find an SL rated "petrol" oil for about
$5 less for 5 litres.

Cheers,
Steve
