Hi All,

Long time no post, but i'm pulling my hair out and i'm sure someone
will be able to help.

The problem is as in the subjet line - interior lights will not turn
off, even if i select "off" instead of "door" on the toggle switch.
Annoying during the day, even worse at night.

The car in question is a VY Senator.

All doors are closed, as is the boot.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,

Fabric.

I had this happen on an early Discovery, and the problem was the
little switch that closes when you close the door had fallen back into
the cavity behind the front guards, and as they are spring-loaded in
the "door open" position, the light stayed on (the British, in their
wisdom, neglected to fit any switch at all to the front interior
light!).
A VY probably has something a little more modern than the 1992 Disco,
but whatever it uses to assess whether an aperture is open might have
the same issue.

We had a similar-but-opposite problem in our Charade - the interior
light never went on when you opened the driver's door, but worked with
the passenger's - the switch on the door frame turned out to be
'sticky', and removing it and cleaning it up a bit seemed to clear
whatever the problem was.

IIRC on Commodores the switch is actually below the A-pillar part of
the door opening surround (ie, on the car body not on the door), near
the hinges.

back to the OP, if the lights stay on regardless of the switch position and
door/boot opening I would be thinking a short somewhere, could be expensive
to chase down with the amount of wiring in a modern car :-(

By the time I discovered the light was on in this Disco, it was dusk
(8 pm); I didn't have a single tool with me (the light cover was held
by locating screws which were hidden beneath some giant map-pocket
which was very fastened to the roof lining!) and I was somewhere
between Sydney and Tamworth. I was picking up this old Merc on the car
trailer and intended to do the round trip in one go.
I ended up buying the most you-beaut space-age best-of-the-best-of-the-
best duct tape (I'm assuming it was good as it cost $20!) from an all-
night truck stop and just covering it for the trip! ;-)
(I can't believe that was the only problem I ever had with that
car!!!)

Check the switches, and in particular the master switch you use to turn the
lights on when the doors are closed.

Aha, tried that, all door switches, master, map lights, boot &

Do these cars have a relay to provide a delay? If so it could be that
the relay is sticking.

I found a relay called "lighting" when removed does prevent all
interior lights from working, so I swapped it out with another relay
of equal capcity.. still no luck.. I'm beginning to think the short-
circuit theory is becoming more likely..

8?! For fuck's sake! :-) A trip to a decent auto sparkie might be the
least insanity inducing answer to this one unfortunately. Unless you
*like* pulling interior bits apart.

Cheers,
Andy.

If it has a delayed-off function (when working *properly* of course) and relay
swapping ahsn't addressed it, I'd suspect an electronic module provides the
delay and it has gone belly-up. Ring a Holden dealership and ask some questions
- they just might know.

Clockie, where are you?

The interior lights are switched through the BCM which has a relay to
control that operation internally.

Try disconnecting the BCM under the drivers side lower dash panel, or
alternatively disconnect the battery for 10 minutes or so.

Giving it a tap won't hurt either. What can happen is that the interior
light relay in the BCM can get stuck on and no matter what you do the light
won't go off. By disconnecting the BCM or battery for a few minutes it
allows the BCM relay to cool down and it will often release especially with
a firm tap to the exterior housing.

A particular (short) range of VY's were prone to this particular BCM fault.

I'd be checking again.

All 8 globes can only be getting power if a switch is making it happen.

I reckon it is the switch.
