Local Dam is 100% +
(Q) Can we wash our vehicles with town water?
As predicted Hinze dam (our local supply) is now wasting water, pouring
over the spillway, shown on last nights TV news.
What a miserable joke on all of us. Save every drop?!?!
Our GCCC Mayor has feebly proposed to the evil water overlords (Qld Water
Commission) we be exempt from restrictions, well no, apparently just
lowered to level 2 or 3. Considering that the dam went from 58% to 100% +
in a of couple of weeks, what if another period of heavy rain, major
flooding next?
IIRC The acting premier words were to the effect that the level 6
restrictions wouldn't be lifted unless dam overflow posed a safety issue.
Can we now wash our cars and bikes with town water and a hose?
(A) Probably not, in fact I wouldn't be surprised even now that if you
used a hose (or buckets) to wash your car, you would get a hefty $$ fine,
even though you are using water that would presently be wasted.
Is this the ultimate in intergovernmental bureaucratic bullshit????
Sorry about the *BIG words. Stay tuned!
Looking out, it's occasional light rain today. Yesterday was mostly fine.

Seems like anyone with common sense would relax water restrictions but
then its controlled by a politician so there goes that argument:-)
I have 3 240lt wheelie bins full of rainwater that I use for car
washing, I bought some plastic "tank fitting" from Bunnings that allow
me to connect a high pressure cleaner to them, washing the car usually
uses about 60lts.

Lots more than we had in the dam before the 1 in 1000 year storms a
couple of years back. It went from 28% to over 80% that time.. and
strangely before event that you could wash your car.
gotta go, back tonight.

R Clarke was on the wireless yesterday suggesting that the (Can't day the
word) Dam needs to have a 10% reserve for flood mitigation. Also that
they were upping the wall height by some crazy amount (?? 24 metres??)
anf that was slated to occur pretty soon - studies done etc etc, and
State GovCo permission seemed to be in the bag, so to speak. Best ask
about the time-frame - sounded to me like 18 onths.
As for Ozone in a later post replying to thise one as well, the rain
'events' of the moment are 1 in 25 year shots, not one in 50. BTW, the
major flood we had in SEQ in 1974 was more or less a repeat of the 1894
effort. In the 1974 case, most of the runoff was from the Bremer river -
untouched since. So if we get a decent hiding from a weather system
dumping on the Bremer catchment, Brisbane is fucked - again. BTW, there
was 'cloud' from the deck to 23000 feet for all of Southern Qld when the
1974 event started - I was Pax in commercial jet at the time, and the
pilot remarked on the PA that something Big was going down 'cause what
he'd flown through was he considered to be - unprecedented - was the term
he used.
Wivenhoe dam was originally built as a flood mitigation dam, hopefully to
'store' the Brisbane Stanly rivers flow so the Bremer can get a clear
shot at Graceville, Jindalee, Oxley, City,Bulimba etc. and is assuredly
designed to be mostly empty - so of course the Advantage Taking arseholes
in GovCo and their associated CorpBandit Toadies spend considerable
effort frightening us with images of Wivenhoe down on water level, and
including it in stats for water storage. the recent raising of the wall
was done by those who remember 1974 - fully aware that GovCo was busy
turning the thing into a water supply dam whether they needed to or not.
BTW, Wivenhoe dam is actually upstream of the Bremer/Brisbane river
junction, and just a few kilometres downstream of the Somerset Dam - yes,
a water *Storage* dam - built that way from the outset.
North Pine dam is ALSO a flood mitigation dam, built with a view to
selling land off to suckers downstream as essentially flood free. Not so
if the bastard is already full when a cyclone dumps on the area.
There's a lesson here I guess - that aus.level.land anywhere is fucked in
terms of habitation unless your house is a raft. I just wish dumb and
dumber would get that message.

They were not 1 in 50 year storms, it was a single tropical low event.
There is usually at least one tropical low event in the region every
wet season (summer). Because this is a La Nina summer there is a
high chance of another event before the end of Autumn.
There is now a very real risk of severe flooding in the Nerang river
system if any more heavy falls occur because the buffering effect of
the dam is now zero.
As well, too much swamp/wetland area has been developed and this land
no longer has the ability to buffer. There are a lot of dodgy land
developments.
The Gold Coast City Council is shit scared of another dumping because
they know that their dodgy land use approvals and flood mitigation
planning will come under scrutiny if there is major flooding in the
city. Naturally the GCCC wants to relax water restrictions.
Anyone who lived through the 1974 floods knows only too well what is
going to happen.

Perhaps they are planning to pump half the water to another less full dam or
increase the load on that dam.. Not sure if they have the infrastructure to
do it.

Which begs the question why the Hinze dam level shouldn't be kept at a
level to reduce flooding rather than 100%. Shouldn't we presently be
using water like crazy?
Wonder what the insurance scum think of this?

It's fukken true, I tell you :-)
We entered some stupid agreement where our dam level is somehow linked to
all dams levels producing an average whereby we don't really have an
overflowing dam, it's just ... well not water but probably feldspar.

I guess you remembered when I said the Hinze dam would overflow a few
years back. I must be some sorta Nostradamus (sp) but no, it was
inevitable.
I wouldn't be surprised if there is another deluge on the way and with
saturated ground, could be quite interesting.
Cheers Atec.. oh and happy new year... and of course get fuck*d and it
goes without saying you've just told me to get fuck*d too.

the back of the water plant near Jimboomba , 10 kg + is common atm.. to
many damned bones though so we mushed 'em and feed the dogs.. who were
very pleased
If you have a look at the Courier mail links they have photo's of that
area with the unfoodable paddock and road near the Jimboomba servo under
1 metre... now I wonder where the 5 million went a while back for the
addition works

Global warming via greenhouse gases theoretically has the mid/upper
troposphere warming more rapidly than the surface. i.e. the "warm
blanket". Measurements seem to show that the surface temperatures
are rising. That proves the AGW hypothesis false.

Absolutely.
Give the popular baseline for what's normal, anything more tepid
than a little ice age is global warming.

Scammed again.
I probably shouldn't mention it - BUT - water restrictions are close as
dammit to a Tax.
And they Will Not Be Removed by advantage taking GovCo - there's just too
much money to be made by the advantage taking GovCo Toadies.
Their Mad Turd Regenerating scheme is already Late and Over-Budget and
it's early days yet.
