Oooh errr. Now this is embarrassing. On Sunday arvo, while reversing
into my car spot in the apartment block parking area, I hit the pipe
that sticks out on the left side of the pillar. Now I have managed to
park my car in the spot hundreds of times without denting the car, so
this is a first.

I think I took my mind off the job for a second or two. Or maybe I was
thinking of Hayden Panetierre when I was reversing the car. Whatever.

I am now left with a dent giving the impression of a pipe on the
corner of the left end of my rear bumper. Only the top half of the
rear bumper is dented though. Some paint has been scratched off and
there is definitely a small crack in the bumper.

I rang up Sydney City Subaru spare parts and was quoted $300 - 380 for
a replacement bumper (I didn't have my VIN with me so they couldn't
give me the exact figure). This morning I took the car to a local
smash repair centre and they quoted me $770 for a new bumper and
labour (which includes painting the new bumper, fitting it and
removing the towbar on the car).

Oh yes, and my car is a MY02 Impreza RV.

Does $770 sounds excessive for a piece of hard plastic and labour? The
shop said the bumper couldn't be "banged out" to remove the dent. At
this rate, I'll just leave the dent in the bumper as a reminder of my
parking shame.

Thanks in advance.

If you were quoted $380 for a bumper $390 for fitting and painting is on
the high side but not excessively so.
How much is your insurance excess, it may be worth making a claim.
You could also look for a s/h bumper in the correct colour which will be
hard to find but it will save you heaps if you get lucky.

Seems a reasonable price. These things take more to repair (there are things
behind it) and require special paint...not to mention the labor costs.

It doesn't sound overly expensive to me, as you get very little in the way
of painting for 300 odd bucks these days.

You might save a few bucks by searching for a bumper bar repairer in your
local phone book.

Hi Daryl,

My excess is $500 so the difference would be $270. Not sure how much
that would affect my premium when I renew the compregensive insurance.

Thanks to all who replied. I'll have a go with the bumper bar repairer
before making up my mind. Though it looks like I'll just have to wear
the dent as a badge of shame unless I can squeeze more money out of my
boss to make a "vanity purchase".

Doh! the same material used in surfboards.

Probably wouldn't affect it all that much as it would only be a small
claim although claiming would almost be not worth the effort.
I still think s/h would be an option worth checking out.
