View Full Version : burning linux iso to CD

I got a friend with broadband to download Daryna XFCE (LinuxMint-4.0-XFCE
-BETA-008.iso). Its md5 verified so I burnt the image to CD and tried to
boot from it but after about 30 secs of progress it sat endlessly blinking
the keyboard lights. A check revealed that two of the approx. 25 files
on the CD (viz., boot.cat and md5sum.txt) failed the md5sum. No problem,
just burn another CD. I was surprised to find the SAME pair of files on
the second burn failed the md5 check and those two files have md5sums
identical with the faulty pair on that first coaster. So the two burns
produced *identical* faulty CDs.
Q1) How to explain this?
Q2) How to get the CD burnt correctly?
I used Nero Vision Express 3 on XP. It doesn't seem to offer a slow speed
burn, the speed selection window is greyed out. It took just under 8 mins
to burn the full CD -- is that a conservatively slow burn????
It's possible that a single error in file md5sum.txt may lead to file
boot.cat being wrongly flagged as failing its md5 check, but I can find
no "obvious" text error in md5sum.txt.

Try settings the block size to 2048 bytes per sector.

Hi John,
I've had the same problem using Nero, and solved it (not fixed it) by using
Nero ImageDrive to mount the .ISO image and then using Nero to do a
diskcopy, with the mounted image as the source drive. Never had any
problems since.

Just a simple suggestion try K3B, don't rely on "wizards"&co.(
Nero+NT5.1). If you suspect speed, take your time and order the hardware
to burn at 4X. Saved many coasters by 'wasting' time in this way.
Have fun

Hi John,
Agree with previous replies, i.e. you may already have all the advise
you need. I have had similar problems from time to time until I started
using K3b to burn Linux iso:s (and virtually everything else). Even K3b
has occasionally failed me when trying to make make a "multisession"
Linux Puppy, as distinct from Puppy's own iso burner although they work
well as just "live" DVD:s, i.e. I may have missed a setting.
Minor points:
i. The current (Feb. 2008) APC magazine comes with Linux Mint 4.0 (?the
full Gnome version rather than Xfce) on the DVD.
ii.Mint Daryna (Gnome) is excellent.
Cheers

The processor is only 800 MHz, so I was going for the lighter version.
But if other readers are looking for a well-reviewed distro, then the
latest Mint is going to be easy to get hold of. Thanks for letting
us know.

It will be a week before I can find out if that version of Nero even
allows me to set block size.
How will setting the block size to 2K fix things, do you reckon?
