Hi,

I am researching a short list of AV receivers to upgrade from my
Yamaha RX-V995 . I was thinking of sticking with Yamaha but from some
reviews they don't seem to be as good sonically as other receivers available
now . I have downloaded the manuals for these models below and been reading
up on the features ..

Yamaha RX-V3800
Harmon & Kardon AVR 645
Cambridge Audio Azur 640R
Onkyo TX-SR805
Marantz SR6001

I'm not really fussy about video switching as I much prefer to do a
direct connection between player and display , mainly after sound quality in
2 channel and surround with good bass management ... So far I'm leaning
towards the Harmon & Kardon AVR 645 .. So if anyone has one of the receivers
in the list above who can give me their opinion and experience with that
receiver , would take it on in my research ... I will also audition them
before making my final decision ..

Thanks ...

Marantz new models series 002 have been released. Have a look at the 7002 as
a good performer. Qualifi/Marantz Australia haven't listed them on there web
site yet, but a user review of the 7002 can be found here

Will check the Sony out ... Another receiver I've added to the list is the
Pioneer VSX-LX60 . How has Pioneer compared to the rest in multi channel
amps ?

Thanks ...

I picked the Sony for a few reasons

- It's one of the only units on the market that has 6 HDMI inputs, as well
as the usally amount of Standard Analog/Digital Imports
- My previous amp was STR-DB930 top of the line some ten years ago so it was
a known style to me
- Has 3 Zones, Primary AV Zone, 2nd AV Zone and 3rd Audio only Zone
- Has an 5.1ch Analong imput (I have some SCAD discs)

At the time the LX60/70 was not on the market

Downside is no USB or ethernet port, but you can get Ipod/Bluetooth/Sony
Walkman/Ethernet options via Sony's Dimport

Thats my 2 cents

Rgds
Simon.

Hi,
For myself I prefer to connect directly to the TV / Display rather
then use the video switching of a receiver . To me that might degrade the
signal but thats my preference . In a way if there was a multi channel amp
that just dealt with audio only would be great .. Less potential noise
interference from video processing in the receiver etc .. Yes I too have a
few SACD's and DVD-Audio disc and use the 5.1 inputs of my current receiver
.. I also manage to pick up an Outlaw Bass managment unit which works much
better then the internal bass managment of most SACD / DVD -Audio players
.... Only problem is they don't make these anymore ..

At the beggining I was looking into ethernet and USB but I'm not
really that fussed about it now ...

Cheers ...

The Sony STR-DA5300ES receiver has one big plus against all other receivers
and that is the setup...stereo mic that gives absolute phase and exact
position of each speaker in the room ,great for fault finding and a 'true'
test of the setup, much more revealing of simple hard to find faults in
wiring,eg use an extra amp to drive the front speakers and the amp inverts
the phase this test tells you..!most won't and there goes your great sound
for ever..with fronts out of phase with respect to the other speakers,so you
can rest assured with this receivers' tests, and great pricing at present.
and very good analogue amps on board cheers Trevor Lees

I am very impressed with this feature on the 5200ES. I never realised how
easy it could be. Except it always wants to set the sub at a too high a
level.

BTW do you know if there is any firmware upgrades available yet?

Cheers TT
