According to various polls, it's about 70% of australians
don't believe that parliament should have said sorry, so I
would think Johnny is in pretty good company.
Besides, why get upset at Johnny for not saying sorry?
Neither the Keating nor the Hawke governments did.

Or the Prime Ministers that were in power when it was happening.

Exactly! we have to keep reminding labor supporters that no previous
labor govt has said sorry. their tiny brains can't seem to retain that
information for very long.

Or that the legislation that created the problems were done by Labour
governments in the first place.

Howard was smart by not attending. He knows that statement of apologies are
not enough without TAXPAYER FUNDED COMPENSATION.

Howard made a personal apology while he was in office, but it seems that
wasn't enough.

It always is.

Actually, he expressed "deep regret" in Parliament (not his office).

Why do we have to remind them of that?

Why don't we just accept that 'sorry' was said and move on?

Can you please also tell the media this.

I saw in the telegraph an aboriginal gentleman said "Now finally things
will get done for us"

What more do they want?

I agree. Let's all accept the sorry and move on WITHOUT EXPECTING
COMPENSATION.

I don't understand why people are obsessing over this "sorry" business.

(1) The apology was made by (or on behalf of) the Government.

(2) The apology was not made by (or on behalf of) the citizenry.

(3) If any compensation is ultimately paid to the "Stolen Generations" it
won't be because of the apology (indeed, the evdience of the apology itself
cannot be adduced in any court -- we can thank the Parliamentary Privileges
Act and its progenitor Bill of Rights of 1688 for that).

The only thing that mildly irritates me is that everyone has apparently and
quite wrongly assumed that yesterday's parliament is the same parliament
which authorized the "stealing" of the "generations". Either that, or
no-one even gave it any thought.

The "problem" doesn't arise with the Executive Branch's apology. (The King
is dead! Long live the King!)

But those of us who are annoyed by ignorance of legal fictions are a dying

Should not the media report this?

And he said he was sorry when interviewed out of parliament. Not that it
made any difference either way.

But it was.

The government acts on behalf of it's citizens, and was doing what *it*
thought the populace wanted (or, to be more precise, what it thought would
give it great positive press and win favour with the populace).

Once again your ignorance shows.

I suggest you read the full text

Of course I'm well aware that you won't because you have already
