View Full Version : external soundcard for audio dubbing?

I've given up trying to get a clean audio-in line when plugging my
turntable into my internal soundcard at rear of computer. There seems
no way I can eradicate a persistent low-level hum when I try to record
using my Adobe Audition program, even though I've run a ground wire
from turntable to pre-amp and from pre-amp to computer -- and I have
both turntable, pre-amp and computer all plugged into the same
powerboard.
So can anyone suggest a relatively inexpensive external soundcard with
USB connection which I could use for this purpose? I imagine that if I
connect to a dedicated external soundcard (or processing gizmo of some
sort) via the front USB connection, that might eradicate the hum
problem -- or am I being unduly optimistic?

Most likely the problem is with the preamp, its putting the hum on what it gets from the turntable.
They aint expensive, try a better one.

Bet that wont fix the problem, because the hum is on the output from the preamp.

Just wrong, its unlikely to help because the preamp is putting the hum on its output most likely.

Thanks Rod
I appreciate what you mean ... if I drop the pre-amp, I can get at a
moderate cost a unit which seems to be a pre-amp/soundcard hybrid
which will take a direct feed from my turntable and deliver a USB feed
to the computer. Judging from what you say, that modest expenditure
(about $90 for a PL05U- USB EXTERNAL SOUND CARD PHONO/LINE) which I
can directly plug my turntable into, will be the go....

Hi
i agree with Rod, hum from the preamp.
do you need it (preamp) ? ie try plug turntable directly into soundcard
and use it's amp.
or try wrapping the output line around a ferrite ring, that may get rid
of any external interference, like power sources.
