Compass Vs. Patriot

I was following a Jeep just then, the small Rav4/CRV competitor and
was thinking it looked ok & strangely better looking than I
remembered. Badge called it a Patriot.
Five minutes later saw another, slightly different Jeep with pretty
much identical dimensions, and this one was called a Compass, and was
butt-ugly, particularly at the front.
WTF? Am I missing something? Is one really a FWD or something? Why the
in-house sales battle?

BTW the looks of the biggest Jeep (the 7 seater, name escapes me ;-/ )
are really growing on me too. ;-)
