In the current single "superpower" world we live in, who's in the whitehouse
has some effect on a lot of the world,..good and bad. Currently it looks
like (Rep) Guiliani, who I found a little scary is dragging the chain and
John McCain has come in a strong first in the New Hampshire vote. McCain 73,
is an experienced senator with foreign-policy savvy. One would hope that
doesn't mean a trigger-happy bunker-mentality person that GW has come to
represent. On the Democrat side, Hilary Clinton has just pipped Obama. I
find it a little difficult to see Hils winning the Dem Presidential
nomination, mainly due to the "Bill" baggage. If that's so it could be the
first African-American nomination with Obama.
Of course there's still the Presidential vote to come. They have an odd
electoral system over there.

I assume, for example, that 'registered Republican' means 'member of
the Republican Party who is also eligible to vote in candidate
elections', but this morning on AM I heard someone described as a
'registered independent'. I wonder what that means. In the USA, does a
person not only register to vote but say in advance who they might
vote for?

The system is so "odd" and complicated its no wonder so few people
bother to vote over there.

Thats because it is only 120 volts
to run a good electoral system, you need more voltage

Different systems.
The one 'on' now is the electoral college system - selection of
candidates for the major parties, and others, by the plebs motivated
enough to join up. Importantly, if they've got the moola for campaigning,
and energy enough for back slapping hand shaking etc etc.
You can enroll to play there in their wee meetings, as whatever takes
your fancy.
I Don't Know if anyone's allowed to actually vote more than once in these
gatherings.
The 'real' vote is the popular vote for the President as one of the
nominees put up by the majors, or others, if they have the moola etc etc.
Neither enrollment nor actual voting is compulsory in either of the so-
called systems.
Naturally *both* systems are 'fixed', mean nothing at all other than the
circus component and are rotten to the core.
HTH.

In the Yankee electoral sense, the primaries are even vacuum actuated, as
are the secondaries. They both suck.
