Would like some advice on purchasing a new receiver.
Originally had a Sony STR DE-845, served me well for 3 years and then a month after the warranty expired it just stopped working, apparently a microchip glitch or something, but it will cost me a bucketload in labour just to find what the problem actually is.
Anyway, what receivers would people recommend for around the $1000 mark. Will also be looking at purchasing some bose Acoustimass 10 speakers in the future.
Cheers
Jim

Im just about to purchase a yamaha rx-v540 Its 6.1 yadda yadda yadda, the old one served me for 5 years without missing a beat. Its about $999 from a hi fi store.
Also picking up a richter sub at this stage but am still in the testing phase for subs below a grand.
I tend to agree with Scott on the Yamaha ,I have an (old now) RX-V800 and have been very happy with it. So the RX-V540 should be great, although it doesn't have pre-outs apparently.
You need to listen to the different amps with your speakers if possible. for instance I thought the Denon (1803, I think it was) sounded better for music, but the Yammy suited me better for HT. (and I have a seperate system for music anyway)
so IMHO , get all the features you need, like 6.1, pro-logic2, DTS, etc etc, and then let your EARS do the choosing.
my 2c anyway, Rick.

Just make sure you spend a 'reasonable' amount. You will get better sound and longer use out of a $1,000~$1,500 model than the base $500~$600. I know this is slightly obvious to some, but the old adage of 'You get what you pay for' is very true!
BTW I am very happy with my Pioneer, although it is better with external amps, so if you want to run power amps ensure you have pre outs.

yes i have its ok (the demo i got made the component cabinet vibrate and it was a bit annoying) but am getting to hear the richter at a different place this weekend when the guy gets one,The guy at the hi fi shop said they leave the yammy for dead and he sells both but he didnt have richter for me to compare the other day but will on saturday.
Apparently Birch use richter speakers in their cinemas so they must be ok lol.
