PARIS, May 19 (Reuters) - Australia's dominant telecoms group, Telstra
(TLS.AX: Quote, Profile, Research), wants to build the country's high-speed
fibre-optic network but has other options if it fails to win the government
deal, its chief executive said on Monday.
The Australian government last month called for bids for a broadband network
to improve Internet access, which is slower and more expensive than in many
other developed countries. Officials have warned Australia may become less
competitive without faster, nationwide coverage.
The government is offering A$4.7 billion ($4.5 billion) in funding, which it
wants the winning bidder to match. But Telstra Chief Executive Sol Trujillo
told the Reuters Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit in Paris the network
may cost far more to build.
"When you look at 98 percent of the nation -- we have already said publicly
that it would cost us about 4.5 to 5 billion dollars to do the five big
cities of Australia, and we all know that the first 50 percent is a lot more
cost effective than the last 50 percent," he said.
Assuming that the cost of the last 50 percent was roughly twice as high, the
total could quickly run up to A$15 billion, he said.
"We're going to respond to the RFP (request for proposals), but we're going
to respond in a way that makes sense for our shareholders," Trujillo added.

Yeah, it can always pay for the entire thing themselves.

That last is a bare faced lie.

Bare faced lie. No such 'official' has done anything of the sort.

Which it REQUIRES the winning bidder to match.

Nothing like plucking stupid numbers out of your arse.

Then the govt will tell you to go and fuck yourself, just like it did with the Opel contract.

That was originally Telstra's preference.

Rudd did. Admittedly, he wasn't an 'official' at the time.

Only if the govt had been stupid enough to allow them to refuse to resell it.
Which would have returned DSL to a monopoly again.
No thanks.
There's a reason that telstra was forced to allow resale of the copper pair system.
And they should have been forced to resell the adsl2+ system too.

So what I said is correct, that that was a bare faced
lie. No such 'official' has done anything of the sort.
