Telstra has hit back at claims it deliberately sabotaged the Bowral exchange
used by Highland internet and phone providers, saying an unfortunate series
of mishaps led to a fallout of services.
Illawarra general manager Pat Nolan said the suggestion Telstra actively
engaged in devious activity was unfounded.
“I refute that totally,” he said. “I’ve worked with the company a long time,
and Telstra is not the type of company to do that type of deliberate
action.”
“Of course Telstra makes mistakes, we all make mistakes, but what has
Telstra got to gain from something that would only damage our reputation.”
Thousands of Highlands residents were left without internet and phone
connections on Wednesday and Thursday last week after subcontractors
employed by Telstra were ordered to dismantle an active radio link between
Bowral and Sydney, interrupting the communications of local Internet Service
Providers (ISPs).
The subcontractors were working on the Bowral exchange to prepare for the
installation of a Next G mobile phone tower.
