If the virus scan can't find the Trojan, how do you know its there?

Coz I know I've got a trojan. I've been busy trying to remove it all day. The excel spreadsheets have been a bit of a problem for a while & now I know that it has attached it o this particular speadsheet cause it's blank when I open it. So its corrupted...

Could be general corruption that's effected the file and the excel program.

I don't think you understand what a trojan is. a trojan isn't a virus. a trojen is mailware. (a virus is also malware, but a different type).

A trojan's job is to lie waiting for a signal, and then to execute some code. That code generally is to open an entry vector for some hacker to do mischievous stuffs. (or perform some action every time it receives a signal... (Project Chanology;)?) A trojan doesn't infect EDIT: 'corrupt' files. Infecting EDIT: 'Corrupting' files would alert you to its existence. (so it would be a really bad trojan).

Generally speaking, only antivirus software, or incredibly trained Information Security personnel can detect such infections. If your antivirus cant' detect it, its generally not there.

Files corrupt themselves all the time. It happens less often now than it used to (now windows has an atomic file system), but it still happens. Some programs written by sloppy programmers can corrupt your files, it could have been damage from a previous virus infection, or it could be some freak hardware thing.

The Nvidia 680i breed of motherboards had an issue with its inbuilt RAID controller that tended to corrupt random files, it has since been fixed, but strange unforeseen things like that can lead to corrupt files. It doesn't automatically mean you have a 'trojan corrupting things'.

Thank you but I also have had trojans as well so whether its a coincidence I don't know. But it seems to be that whenever I am working on excel over a long period of time it becomes sluggish so hence I think it must have been a trojan. I have deleted a number of trojans of a period of time. But to have corrupted just this file is just so annoying...

Sluggish machine generally means the machine is unmaintained. Just like a car, you can't expect to just leave a computer and expect it to run properly forever. registry cleaners, antivirus cleaners, spyware cleaners and other such things need to be done at a regular basis.

generally speaking, sluggish machine is caused by excessive spyware, or your machine is too old. (doesn't have enough memory , space or computational power to do what you are asking it to do)
