Best of the $100 DVD players ?

OK guys, I need your help. I would like to bring the Oldies into the digital age and buy them a DVD player for Xmas. now I'm a cheapskate :) so I would only like to spend around $100 - $150
has anyone got and/or recommend one of the budget players ?

Yeah Rick get the Digitrex that they are selling at Big W for only $97 or is it $87 can't remember. I bought one about a month ago to have a second player and its plays everything.

It might be worthwhile looking around for a cheap DVD player with a Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder built in.

You can tell by looking at the back: they have 6 extra audio channels(FL,FR,C,SL,SR,SW) as well as the stereo outputs, & digital audio socket(coax ot optical)

I got a DVD player with Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder built in for my sister-in-law, and I connected some powered computer speakers to the rear channels (SL,SR). It made her setup sound SO MUCH better, with just the ambience of the surround channels.

Make & models?? I guess all "no name" brand DVD players are a risk, but I saw a "PYROD" brand in HiFi Supermarket a while back for $89. It had a Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder built in!!!! Good value if it's reliable.

Many of the newer Chinese no-name brands use the ALI M3351 chip which combines MPEG decoding, DVD drive control, video, audio and 5.1 audio decoding in one. This keeps the cost down.

another cheap dvd player is the digitor from dick smith ($98 - when i bought it) about $118 now and you will need to buy av cords seperatly.

New YESS DVD model 999. Multizone and Macrovision free.

$95 Retravision Springvale. Bought one for a friend Saturday and set it up.

Downside is that the Remote Control is much much smaller and not as good as my model 933. Besides that excellent value.

I got someone to buy me a Yess D933 yesterday from Retravision in Springvale for $95 too and I chose this model over the D999 after reading your post. The macrovision is certainly disabled as I can record a Region 1 DVD onto VHS and it plays discs which wouldn't read on my Sony DVD Player.

One question on how to setup audio sound to TV and VCR. On my Sony DVD player, I have a separate L/R Audio RCA output which I connect to my TV input and a Digital/Coax going to my 5.1 Receiver. However, there is no separate L/R audio output on the Yess Player. If I use the Front L/R to my TV input, then I won't have anything to go to my VCR. Therefore, I'm connecting the Front Left to my TV input (mono), Front Right to my VCR and Digital Coax going to my VCR. This setup allows me to get audio to my TV as well as audio to my VCR when I want to record to tapes, but I won't be able to get the ideal Stereo sound setup.

Any help is much appreciated.

Get an RCA audio/video switch box, I think DSE or Tandy have them for about $30....

thanks for the reply. I'm a little concern that the audio/video switchbox will degrade the output quality. I guess this is only solution. I've emailed Yess but they have yet to reply.

Just get two double adaptor plugs for the audio cable. it will change the single into a double, and you can pick them up at DSE for I'd imagine around $5 each.

Stevie, what kind of Reciever have you got? , can't you connect everything into the reciever and use it as a switch box to the T.V ie "monitor out"
some recievers also have record in/out for the VHS so you can tape whatever source is playing. Rick.

I know someone who bought the Pyrod. It's works, but the loading sometimes needs a couple of goes, and it is a bit noisy. (makes scraping noises before spinning up to speed!!!!!)

I bought a Nintaus 9896 as a second DVD player. It has a lot of features including progressive scan, Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder built in, DVD audio. It cost $98 at JB HiFi. It seems like a good quality, well put together unit (so far!!!)

Mike_Downunder - You should still be able to buy the Yess D933 DVD with macrovision disabled at Retravision in Springvale (VIC). Don't bother calling other Retravision stores as they don't stock this brand. I got mine for $95. I read somewhere that the D999 model is also macrovision disabled so check it out.

Rick - I have a Marantz SR780 5.1 Receiver. I got the spaghetti cablings sorted and does what I want it to do (mono setup). My only gripe with the Yess D933 is that it doesn't come with a separate L/R Audio output like my SONY DVP-M35 DVD Player :confused: .
