Hi people,

I finally pulled my finger out and bought a DVD player yesterday. After much research, deliberation, and discussion with the dude from SCR, I walked out of there with an Omni 3200 for $329.

According to the SCR dude, he reckons it's one of the best units they've ever had. Now before you say "well, he has to say that so he can get the sale", I asked him about a few other models (in particular, the Diamond 201 and the DVX 9000) and he said "you don't want that, it's a piece of s##t!". Gotta love that honesty.

When I asked about the problems with disc loading on some Omnis he said "yeah, it's the 3102 that has had a few probs" (he obviously reads the same forums I do!).

I ended up narrowing my choice to the good ol' XMS-750 and the 3200. I ended up choosing the 3200 because (a) downloadable firmware, (b) good feedback about support from SCR and Galas on the Omni range, (c) the dude at SCR said it was good :D and (d) it's kinda sexy looking, where as the the XMS is uglier than the hat full of the proverbials.

So, have I done the right thing?

Can the 3200 do NTSC to PAL playback OK?

I mean is the playback smooth?

I'm curious to know, as the Omni 2000 could but the playback was far from smooth, but the Omni 3102 has very smooth playback on the NTSC to PAL conversion.

Give me a Region 1 DVD and i'll tell you. :D

Seriously, I have no idea. It appears to be pretty smooth with R4 PAL stuff, as well as VCDs. There's some minor pixellation, but that may have more to do with the numbnut doing the capturing and encoding of the VCDs rather than the machine. ;)

Oh yeah, it has a Panasonic loader as well so here's hoping that the 3102's wacky disc loading-related mood swings won't be something I have to cope with.
