What advantage is gained over just stopping down to the lowest possible
f-stop and obtain maximum sharpness.

The lowest possible isnt the same as the best f-stop. For each lens the best
f-stop is calculated from performance tests.

Circles of confusion - if you need big ones or little ones.

Miro I don't think that was the intended reply.

Its not lens performance in question but one of DOF.

Q. Why bother calculating hyper focal distance when you can just close
the lens down.

I should have worded that differently.

Lets say you test your lens and find the Fstop where quality begins to fall
of and not stop if down further, then just use when you want max DOF.

The spinny ring making darker photo diffractions the photo, more gooder
darkening not always down to pitch black. Best darken to balance of highest
qualitating.

Two different things, you can still calculate hfd for the
lowest possible f-stop.

If you set to lowest possible fstop and focus at infinity,
you are getting less dof than if you set it at the
hyperfocal. You use the max dof if you focus at the
hyperfocal for any fstop (hyperfocal is different depending
on coc, focal length and aperture)

maximizing your depth of field over any given aperture, stopping down need not
do this and can still leave bits out of focus which may have the potential to be
_in_ focus were the hyperfocal distance taken into account.

Wouldn't the Hyperfocal distance achieve you getting the greatest distance
of focus from the near point to the far point that you would require in
focus
while shutting down to the lowest possible F Stop would give you the biggest
range, there is no garantee that you will get the maximum from it.
Especially if you missed the focus point by a good 30 metres (Yep done it)
Also. Best from a lense optically is generally 2 stops from minimum aperture

Anyway, shoot landscapes not an issue, but in Macro on short distances, it's
a good tool to be able to calculate the Hyperfocal distance to get the most
out of it. That way you can tell at what point you actually really need to
focus on and what F stop and shutter speed is required.
