I`m getting a very noticable sound coming from within my Foxtel satellite (humax) set top box. The sound changes from channel to channel and ranges from a high pitched type squeak to a lower pitched(hard to explain) sound.
Sounds almost like a type of radio interference??
Really starting to p### me off.
Anyone have any experience of this problem.
Thanks...

I had a problem with a noisy decoder, then it completely went out all
together, all it made was high pitch squeeks like a bird, had to get the
decoder replaced by foxtel.

they operate with a switch mode power supply, the change in pitch of the
noise is the different loads placed on the power supply, it is on its way
out, but the time factor to self destruction cannot be known. I would try
and get it replaced or repaired. The fault will probably lie in low value
electrolytics.

The power reason makes sense as the noise suddenly got a lot worse yesterday after firmware upgrade. My fine signal has gone from a solid 100% down to a consistant 83%. Decoder probably needs more power now due to dropped signal strength. Why would Foxtel reduce signal strength??

Guys, absolutely ignore the 'signal strength's OK, it will tell you that
there is signal there, but it's measured in 'elephants' not dBuv, every box
is different, and this displayed figure is worked out by a crap algorithm
devised by the manufacturer. the important figure is 'cnr' or 'quality'
.....now, with C1 'currently'(!) putting out the power it does, this figure
should be huge..... irrespective of strength..
