Am thinking of buying a zoom lens for my 300D.
I borrowed a friend's Canon 75-300mm (1:4-5.6) lens today, and was
fascinated by it's power. Would $200 be a good price for that second
hand. If I were to go for brand new around that area what price could
i expect from shops?

Another question, is it worth spending the extra money for a USM lens?
I do mainly aviation photgraphy. But also some people photos.

Last time I checked, the 75-300mm no longer exists, having been replaced by
the cheaper 90-300mm zoom (see www.dirtcheapcameras.com.au). Depending on
your use, I'd consider the USM option as it's very quick and quiet in terms
of focusing, helpful if you're doing sports - well worth the extra $50-100.

ebay usually has a number of 75-300's for sale, or you might get lucky at a
camera store or cash converters.

Yes. You can borrow my 70-300 if you want to before you
waste money on one. They are hopless for air shots.
e-mail if you want to.

I don't know if they are useless for air shots (assuming you mean aircraft,
because my news server missed a few days of messages, including the start of
this thread....)

Anyway, with the 75-300 for aircraft, do not expect to get very good results
with autofocus, unless your technique is very good at keeping the aircraft
in the centre focus point. However, I find that manual focus for airshows is
not too difficult. Typically the motion of the aircraft is very predictable
making tracking manually quite easy. That being said a mate of mine does
rely on AF with a 75-300 USM, and doesn't get too bad results.

Now, there isn't really much choice unless you want to spend substantially
more.
