View Full Version : Canon 10D & Error 99
I've just purchased a 2nd hand Canon EF 50mm 1.8 II lens, apears to
work pretty well on my 10D. However, it showed an 'Error 99' when I
have taken a few shots. I had to switch it off and on again to clear
the Error. Then it happened again after serveral shots (I believe I
was struggling for a minimal focusable distance at the time- as my
daughter was crawling toward the camera as I was trying to photograph
her). I wonder if this circumstance has caused the error. I then
read the manual to see what Error 99 means, but the book just said to
take out the battery and put it back in. I did that. Then tried the
same lens on some outdoor shot. I took another 15 shot and didn't get
any 'Error 99' to appear again.
This concerns me a bit and wondering if there's something wrong with
my camera.
Has any experience this 'Error 99' code?

Hi,
Basically, error 99 means "anything else that could be wrong"... not
very helpful. It doesn't have a specific fault description - it's the
catch-all error message.
Anyhow, the standard thigns apply. Check the contacts on the lens and
make sure they're all present and clean. Do the usuall things to the
lens to make sure the focus ring can move through it's entire range etc.
If you can, try a different lens on the camera, and a different camera
on the lens.
Since that lens has a plastic mount, and it's second-hand, check that it
isnt worn too much. Put it on the camera and click it into place, then
twist the barrel of the lens back and forth to see how much movement is
there. The contacts might be slipping off.
Otherwise, if nobody has anything more usefull.... send it to the big
'C' and wait for it to come back (:

Scott,
Thanks for that. I will check these things the next time it happens
(not that I am hoping for it to happen again).
