Anybody got grease on dvd, what is the picture and sound like, the reviews I
have seen don't think much of it but they can sometimes be a bit harsh
especially when they think the dvd could have been done better. So I would
really like to know what the average joe thinks of this dvd in terms of just
the movie itself.

Its pretty acceptable for the age of the film - reasonable video and audio.
Nothing reference quality or anything, but its fine.
It is of course a Superbit DVD compared to the R4 release of Grease 2.

Hi I thought the Picture and Sound quality where great for a film of this
age though I felt the Special features were lacking abit but definitely a
must have for a fan of Grease
Picture 10/10
Sound 10/10

Thanks to the 2 people who replied to this post, I think I will get this
title now rather than wait for a possible special edition release, besides I
can't find any indication that one is in production. As far as the
video/audio quality of grease dvd goes I am not surprised to hear that the
transfer is decent enough as I own " The final countdown" which I nearly did
not buy because of the bad review of the video quality, as it turned out it
was nowhere near as bad as it was made out, definitely way below reference
quality but not so bad as to be annoying, I guess it is very subjective, I
certainly would not accept this level of quality on a recent movie but the
fact is when it comes to these older movies I have more tolerance.
Just as an aside when I tried to look for old posts on this subject
unsuccessfully I cam across the following post about the emergence of dvd,
it's interesting to see what people thought when dvd was just emerging,
plenty of doubting Thomas's by the sounds.

Didn't the current release come out in a blaze of publicity with a
cast reunion and stuff? Or maybe that was an anniversary. I dunno.
Maybe region 1 is worth a look?

If there was a blaze of publicity with the dvd release I didn't see it.
As for region 1, it is no better in this case.
As this is a first dvd release and it is a major title I would be very
surprised if we did not see a special edition release sometime though as
double dipping on dvd titles seems to be a minimum. I have heard no news
when this will be though, they keep this info well under wraps it seems for
obvious reasons. Digital bits seems to be the best website for this info,
their rumour mill is pretty good, it just saved me from buying "The good the
bad and the ugly" by the skin of my teeth, a special edition is due out next
year.

It must have been a 25th anniversary thing then. :P
About 6? months ago John Travolta and Olivia Newton John were all over
the assorted entertainment news programs doing interviews about
Grease. It was roughly the same time that talk started of another
sequel with JT & ONJ and Kylie Minogue playing their daughter
*shudder*.

All the special features on the DVD were on the 20th anniversary video..
But the film quality is the best its ever been or likely to be.. Well worth a purchase.
And if you buy it from Holland, it has a funky looking cover, but will cost you alot, so for fanatics only I reckon

If the picture/sound quality is the best it is likely to ever be then I
would not hesitate to buy it but the reviews I have read reckon they used
the same transfer that was made for the 20th anniversary laserdisc and video
and so therefore expect a better transfer could be made for dvd, whether
that is true or not is another matter, I can see some logic in this
possibility as before dvd was available they maynot have bothered to make a
transfer any better than could be appreciated on laserdisc, waste of time
and money unless they anticipated a better format in future that they could
use this transfer with.
Anyhow there was an interview done in 2002 where it was said that a special
edition would come out in 2004 but of course a lot could have changed since
this was first said and there are certainly no rumours of a new release yet
despite many other dvd release rumours. The big question is whether a new
transfer will be made for such a release, if not then the current grease dvd
will be fine for my purposes.
