As somebody pointed out in a similar thread, once you remove the box from the plastic it came in it's no longer a
collectable, or no longer a collectable of any real value at least.

For TTT, like FOTR, I purchased 2 copies. 1 for me and one for keeps. I'm sure only the grandkiddies will benefit but
WTF.

But how collectable are DVDs? I've had a couple of DVDs that were going
for US$400 on Ebay. Then a few years later new versions were released
and the value of the originals plummeted.

You may have luck with truly original versions, like signed copies or
numbered limited releases, but for something as mass produced as the
LotR box sets I wouldn't call them hard to find.

As for the Grandkids issue, I'm sure DVD will be long gone and the
actual discs, if they haven't rotted away, won't work on
SuperHiDef3D-Holomatrix brain players or whatever the hell we have by
then.

You may make some money in the short/medium term ie, 1-5 years with
limited releases, assuming they actually go out of print, but I don't
see much return beyond that, now that most titles will be re-released
for HD-DVD in a few years.
