View Full Version : Foxtel satellite update question

Hi there:
A friend of mine recently had Foxtel (satellite) installed. She works
evening shift, and leaves the decoder on standby - ie powered-on at
the mains, but on standby from the remote - when she's not at home and
watching it, and hence she hasn't seen any notification about this
firmware update.
Under these circumstances (powered-on but on standby), will her STB
have already been automatically updated by the OTA update in the last
couple of evenings, OR has she now "missed the boat" on it?
I'll phone her today and have her leave it fully "on" this evening
(from around 8:30pm Sydney time isn't it?) if the OTA update is still
available. Is there any need for a user to be around to accept the
update, or does it download/commit unattended?
What firmware revision(s) should be reported on the box if it _has_
been applied (the box is the current/latest one being installed by
Foxtel)?
Thanks,
ted.h.

the upgrade happens automatically and you dont have to do anything
It will take 10 or so minutes
We lost signal in that time
I noticed in the setup that there is a option to do it manually
dont know if that can be used also.

Box can be in standby to RX d/load.
There is an 'enhancement' function in the menu, this only appears if the box
hasn't got its upgrade. It disappears when upgrade has been done.

Hers would definitely have been in standby over the whole period.
Would it have already updated then? If so, how can I get her to check
this (ie is there an update log anywhere on the box, or what version
numbers/dates should I have her look for on what menus)? [aside: I
don't want her to have Foxtel suddenly not working next week, and I
don't want to drive all the way out to her house and try to figure it
out after the event - if I can possibly help it...]

Can you please give me a runthrough of the keystrokes to bring this up
and check it (ie exactly where this "enhancement" option appears on
the menus), and then if necessary the remote control key-by-key
procedure to apply the upgrade and check that it committed
successfully. From the sounds of the threads in here, there's going to
be a fair bit of this going on around Australia over the next few
days...
NB: I'll have to talk her through it on the phone, and I don't have
satellite myself (and she doesn't have internet access so I can even
conveniently look things up if I go out there), so I unfortunately
need to be fairly well "armed" in advance.
Thanks, and sorry to be a bother,
ted.h.

Ted I don't have a foxbox, so cant guide you thru the menu, if the box was
on, then it will have the download by Monday. with the austar box it is
menu,austar,viewer setting,installation,decoder settings, enhancement.
The enhance option wont be there if it has already been done.

Ted, on a UEC 720, if you go into the advanced menu, you may have a Decoder
Upgrade option - only if you don't already have the upgrade. You can also go
into the Information option from Advanced Options. One of the options under
that menu will give you the firmware version and the Date. My firmware is
dated 11/11/2003 and the install date was 26/11/2003. I assume this is the
new firmware.
I never leave my box on - it is always in standby when I am not using it.
One of the differences I have seen with the new firmware is that the macro I
use on my Pronto Remote acts differently. Previously, I turned the box off
with a command that turned the box on (to TV1) paused for 2 seconds and then
hit the on/off toggle. (a poor mans discrete off command) That used to make
the foxtel box show the time in the display (which also now shows 07:00
rather than 7:00 - but I digress) Now when I run that macro, I don't get the
time anymore - I get a pale green dot in the bottom right hand corner of the
display (which is actually what the manual says you should get when the box
is in standby). I increased the time in the macro to 3 seconds and now I get
the time back again.....

Thanks; that's a good pointer for me anyway!
I've just found the PDF versions of the manuals for the foxtel
satellite boxes at (http://www.uec.co.za), so I'm having a quick look
and trying to clue myself in a little.

Thanks David, that's excellent information and advice! I should be ok
now.

There should be a way to force a check for new firmware - if its the latest
it wont download :)
