View Full Version : Frontier at Harvey Normans
Scott Howard
29-11-2003, 02:49 PM
Well it seems that Harvey Norman and Fuji have jumped into bed together,
and a number of Harvey Norman stores now have their own Frontier machines,
doing both film and digital prints.
All done via one of the Fuji kiosk machines, so you can either do it
yourself, or get them to help. It seems to have all of the usual image
manipulation stuff you'd expect (crop/resize/B&W/levels/etc) but I
didn't play with that part.
Prices are :
6x4 75 cents, dropping in quanties to I think 45 cents, but they have
an introductory price of 45 cents for all
6x8 $2.95
8x10 $6.95
10x12 $8.95 (i think)
The only real problem with the system seems to be if you want matte prints.
The Chatswood Chase shop was out of Matte paper, and said they wouldnt
have any more for about 2 weeks. The "Harvey Norman Express" shop in the
Chatswood mall had no idea what "Matte" was, but when I said the opposite
of Gloss he worked out I wanted "Lustre".
Only problem is that there's no way to select from the Kiosk if you want
gloss or lustre - it's just a matter of which paper is in the machine at
the time. Given I was the only person in the shop this worked fine, he
just put the lustre paper in before I submitted the photos, but if there
was a queue I'm not sure exactly how this would work.
Printing time was a few minutes from start to finish, with the only real
delay being the time to switch the machine from the 8x10 paper to the
6x4/6x8 paper (I had a few of each).
Quality is.. well.. it's Frontier - nuff said?
All up, quite impressive. Two 8x10s, one 6x8 and six 6x4's for $19.55 in
less than 15 minutes. Twenty metres around the corner at Flethers the
same would have cost me almost $40, and taken somewhere between 24 and
48 hours.

perhaps he did. perhaps the guys at hardlynormal were trained better,
and knew how to operate their snazzy piece of machinery. and perhaps
your frontier lab is giving better results these days.

All true, but the fact that the Frontier only accepts sRGB images is still a
bit of a downer! :-(

my F90x only accepts 35mm filmstock - that's a bit of a downer.
I still yearn for medium format... might just take the MF plunge at
the same time I pick up my D100 to replace the 90.

Lustre is what most people think is 'Matte'. You can also get matte
processing paper but I have only seen it used it 8x10.

You mean get APS format quality in a 35mm digital.
Medium format leaves it all for dead.

I'm aware of this, but try finding me a worthwhile minilab operator who
doesn't know what someone wants when they ask for "matte"...

Strewth, that's a bit harsh! A full-frame sensor that gives a file about
34Mb and you call that APS format quality....?
>
> Medium format leaves it all for dead.
Maybe MF is better in some respects, but leaving it for dead? You could say
exactly the opposite, that 1Ds is better that MF, and you would also be
correct. The fact that you can preview the files, instant usability, cost
savings on film and processing.... the list goes on.
Would be nice to ask the thousands of wedding and portrait shooters who have
ditched their RB's, Blads, Bronica's and Rollei's for 1Ds's if they
considered that MF leaves the 1Ds for dead? I know a few guys who have gone
down this road in the past 6 months and their view is a LOT different to
yours....

Sure it is, if convenience and long term cost savings are more important
than the quality of the product you present to the client.

You know "a few guys" so why speculate on what "thousands" think. Yes,
it might be good to ask the rest of the "thousands". You might even find
that many haven't ditched their MF gear at all, and use their 1Ds's or
whatever for less critical assignments where the extra quality from
their RBs would be overkill.

Sums it up pretty nicely:
"The End of Compromise
All photography is about compromise. We'd want 4X5" view camera quality
from a Minox if we could get it. But we can't. So we are forced to use the
most appropriate tools for the job at hand. For me this has meant that I
use 35mm for wildlife and nature and medium format for landscape.
Versatility vs. image quality.
But now with the Canon 1Ds I am in what can only be described as a state
of bliss. I have the versatility of 35mm equipment and lenses along with
image quality that previously was only available from medium format. No, I
can't make 36 X 48" poster sized prints the way I can from 6X7cm scans.
But I can make stunning prints up to 20X24", and that's just fine for my
needs most of the time.
....
Because I've been asked the question several times recently, let me answer
it straightforwardly here. I am moving away from medium format and film in
general, and expect that I will be doing 90% of my photography with the
Canon 1Ds and D60 from now on. I have recently sold my Pentax 645
equipment and while I'm hanging on to the Pentax 67 outfit, I really am
not sure when I'll use it next. It too might get sold soon. My XPan and
Leica M equipment stays in the mix because they both offer unique
capabilities, but frankly, working digitally has become like a drug; image
quality is so superior to film and workflow so much more convenient that
it's hard to look back. Film? Oh ya, I remember film."
Hope you trust the guy. :)

Wouldn't that depend upon the product that the client requires? I still
shoot team posters on an RB but if I was still shooting weddings or
portraits I wouldn't hesitate to go for a 1Ds. Same goes for commercial
work A3 or smaller... I shoot a lot of commercial / corporate work on a
D100 and now a D2H and there is no problem with quality. However, I
wouldn't hesitate to pull out the RB for shots that require MF film
filesizes or resolution. (aerials are a classic example).

Because I browse a wedding photography forum (with A LOT of paid
subscribers) quite a bit and it seems as though all of them have gone or are
moving to digital along with most of the photographers in my city. I
shouldn't have said "ditched" their MF gear, just sat it in the back of the
cupboard.
